Inhuman Attack On UN School By Israel: UN Must Develop Standing Peacekeeping Force

By Dr. Vivek Kumar Srivastava

Countercurrents.org

It is a tragedy of modern diplomatic life that Israel seems to have emerged as the Unit Veto system actor as visualized by great International Politics theorist Morton A. Kaplan as it has amassed a large power to decimate its enemy.

It is highly condemned that Israel has attacked a UN school at Rafah. The school named Preparatory A Boys school where many Palestinians were collected after having been uprooted due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. According to eye witnesses at least ten people have been killed and thirty have been wounded. The small children and some adults came under the attack and died. The school was run and looked after by UN and recently had become a shelter place for the displaced ones numbering about three thousands.

This is the second UN school to have come under attack in recent days. This shows that for Israel nothing matters, neither the lives and that too of young ones nor the respect to the international bodies. In the name of national interest and right to self defense it has cared nothing. This is a sad development at the global level and is precursor of more violent world.

The attack symbolizes a clear fact that for Israel the International bodies have no meaning. It also brings into focus that these international bodies as UNO have no relevance in the containment of the grave conflicts. It is now only a resolution passing body. The attacks on its school remind this tragic fact and no country can keep the eyes closed from such developments. It is start of the disrespecting the bodies which have proclaimed that they aim to resolve the conflict by negotiations and want to establish the peace everywhere. The decline of UN is clear. The attack need to alarm the UN that these states may dissolve the human unity which UNO with so much labours has attempted for since its establishment in 1945. It must also recognize that wrong doing of any state cannot be prevented by mere rhetoric.

It must galavanise its Peacekeeping forces and try to find out a stable solution for stoppage of the attacks on Gaza. It may find a place for its Peacekeeping forces to play a crucial role in the prevention of the conflict. For this purpose UN Security Council needs to pass a resolution and it must arrange the military personnel from different countries. The usual time taken by UNO to send Peacekeeping Force is six months. UNO should reduce it earliest and start towards thinking for such establishment of the force. This is essential for the reason that first time UN will come to prevent the Israel. Attacks from Israel will not take place in such conditions because the International community will stand behind the UN Forces. This will be a novel step and is unimaginable at present time but will definitely serve two major purposes; first Israel will be prevented from undertaking the inhuman brutal attacks. Second the attack on UN school which has diluted UN respect and image will be redeemed. There is no gainsaying the fact that attack on the school has shown the unrestricted behavior of Israel and has caused a crack on the UN image too.

The day of today is very important in the world history. Germany and France in Alsace today have marked the day to mark the 100th anniversary of war being declared between their countries in 1914. This shows that we mark the day which remind us that small conflicts may develop in to a world war but we fail to understand that contemporary conflicts too have the similar potential to destroy the world.

We must be beware of this fact. We must recognize that world is passing through a critical phase. The whole world must unite to stop the attacks and UN must also realize its role. Moreover the world leaders need to have fresh rethinking on the reform of UN. It must now have a standing Peace Keeping force of its own. The attack on UN schools must be condemned and new steps need to be taken immediately to deal with such fatal eventualities.
