It is time to make the Senate report on the CIA torture public so no one has to worry about mistakes, in an exclusive interview with the Just Asia (premier weekly video news bulletin on the human rights situation) the Special Rapporteur on Torture, Professor Juan E. Méndez said while responding to the most recent news about the only copy which obtained by the CIA office “has” mistakenly” been destroyed. (programme at https://youtu.be/GpNbVYpnpgI )

Just Asia is being produced by the Hong Kong based rights monitoring and documenting body, the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC), just released its latest episode with the excerpts of the interview in which the Special Rapporteur talked more about Sri Lanka, where he was on an official visit.

Meanwhile, responding the request made by the attorneys of an inmate to him to visit the most secret area of the Guantanamo Bay Prison, Professor Méndez said, “ that would be a significant move if the authority accepted the request and allowed UN mandate holder to visit the Camp”

However, he added, “there are no changes in the conditions that the Pentagon came up with when we were requested for the visit, many years ago. The request was declined by me as some of the conditions by the Pentagon were unacceptable as the UN mandate holder” .

He believed that the authority will be sincere to their promises and the Camp will be closed down soon.

The interview was conducted by Nilantha Ilangamuwa, Editor of Torture Magazine,a bi-monthly printed and online magazine published by the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) and the Danish Institute Against Torture (DIGNITY).
