Western Countries Discussing Arming Lebanese Army

By Countercurrents.org

Syria-intervention is spreading around the region. There are meddling by external forces. Now, the spill over news comes once again from Lebanon .

Citing a "well-informed” source Al-Hayat newspaper reported that western countries are discussing the possibility of providing the Lebanese army with equipment that could help it better control its border with Syria [1].

Meanwhile, Shiite cleric Sayyed Ali Fadlallah said on October 10, 2012 that the Lebanese people should adhere to the dissociation policy adopted by the Lebanese government regarding the events in the war-torn neighboring country, and not implicate themselves in the Syrian conflict.

“All Lebanese should abide by the official stance represented by the dissociation policy regarding the Syrian issue, and should not interfere in this crisis while [respecting] the Syrian people's will to determine the destiny of its country,” Fadlallah said following a meeting with former Prime Minister Salim al-Hoss.

The Shiite cleric also warned that tension in Lebanon could threaten the country's stability through targeting of the “fundamental foundations” represented by the unity between Sunni and Shiite Muslims.

The Lebanese political scene is split between pro-Syrian regime parties affiliated with the March 8 alliance – spearheaded by Hezbollah – and Western-backed forces associated with the March 14 coalition, while the Lebanese cabinet repeatedly underlined its official stance based on dissociation from the Syrian conflict.
