Koodankulam Protesters Need Your Help

By Anitha S

Dear Friend,

Hope you are in the thick of action and thought. I got back from the teeming Samara pandal of Idintakarai day before yesterday after accompanying the extremely sensitive Fact Finding team whose interim report was presented on 20th at a Press Conference at Madurai. The news about fuel loading in Koodankulam NPP has only strengthened the resolve of the people to intensify the struggle.

I want to share with you some issues which would need help from outside. Please start thinking along these lines:

1. The number of people staying in the Pandal has increased 3 fold after the brutalities of Sept 9-10th. The residents of Tsunami rehab colony that is closest to the Power plant and that took maximum attack by Police Force are still in fear. Though many go there for washing and bathing, it is like a ghost city now. There has to be pressure on the Govt that no police will be deployed to terrorise and intimidate the residents.

2.The PMANE has to provide food and drinking water to the people. On an average 5-6 sacks of rice gets cooked every day. The cost for this comes to Rs 20,000/ atleast per day which includes cost of drinking water too.

3. There is no medical facility in the area. Many are afflicted with cough and cold, being out in the open, in the sea and so on. A medical team comprising of a Paediatrician has to visit the area and camp there with essential medicines and first aid. Can the Tamil Nadu support group do something along these lines?

4.The children need to go back to schools and resume studies. How can this be possible when fear is lurking? How can this be stopped ?

5. The men are not going to the sea for many days, this being one of the best fishing seasons of the year. The impact of this on the food and financial security of the people is huge.

Please do work along these lines and act fast along with all support we are organising locally.

thanks and regards
Anitha
