Celebrating The Killing Of Osama Bin Laden

By Mary Hamer

09 May, 2011
Countercurrents.org

*We might ask ourselves how we would be reacting if Iraqi commandos landed at George W. Bush's compound, assassinated him & dumped his body in the Atlantic”. Noam Chomsky. 2011. (1)

*PURPOSE: The purpose of this essay is to explore the topic of: Celebrating the Killing of our Enemies, such as Osama Bin Laden. The 5 th /6 th Commandment states: “Thou shalt not kill”. & Yet humans celebrate killing. (2) Note: In this article I will focus on how Humans celebrate the killing of humans; However, humans also celebrate the killing of Animals, people recklessly kill ecosystems, Homo Sapiens ignorantly cause the extinction of species, humans kill with hate & rage during war & Homo Sapiens kill mercilessly with nuclear bombs. (3)

*DECLARATION of NON-VIOLENCE or AHIMSA:

*Declaration of Non-Violence: I, Mary Hamer will Not: Celebrate, clap, cheer, clink a glass of champagne, drink beer, dance in the streets, fire a gun into the air, gloat, be jubilant, shout with glee, smoke a cigar, swagger with pride, toast a drink, wave a flag, yell out with delight, yell out chest-thumping chants or show any other act of disrespect regarding the Killing of another human being -- including an enemy such as Osama bin Laden. I will not celebrate the use of deadly force & use of a gun to shoot at a person's head & to explode his skull & blow his brains out. I will Not celebrate the deliberate, intentional, willful & pre-meditated killing of another person. I will not express joy at the murder of a human being in the name of justice. I will not celebrate any Macho trigger-pulling ego that shoots a bullet into the head of, blows out the brains of & kills a human being. I will Not use a Native American Indian racial stereotype such as Geronimo – as the code word for the name of an operation to kill someone such as Osama bin Laden. I will not celebrate the killing of a person in order to increase poll numbers. I, Mary Hamer believe that it is wrong to kill, murder, execute, assassinate, torture, maim, slaughter, mutilate, bomb, hunt down & destroy another human being. I believe it is wrong to use deadly force & fire upon an unarmed person -- especially when the person using deadly force is the aggressor/intruder. I will treat all people with respect, even my enemies.

* KEY SECTIONS: The key Sections of this paper are: I. Killing Enemies:. Is it Moral to Celebrate, Cheer & Drink Champagne after Killing a Human Being? Revenge Killing. II. What is the Appropriate Response to Violence? – Is Revenge Justified? What are the Alternatives to Violence? III . The New Gandhi. Paradigm Shift, The Human Ego, Truce, Love Your Enemies.

* I. CELEBRATING The KILLING of OSAMA bin LADEN:

*OSAMA BIN LADEN'S DEATH, PROPAGANDA & RACIAL STEREOTYPES: Osama Bin Laden was killed by U.S. military forces in a (non-)firefight (in Pakistan ) on 5/1/11 . (4) Note: The “Raid that killed Osama bin Laden was not (the) intense firefight” as was originally reported. (5) “The fierce firefight did not occur”. (6) & There was no fog of war.

*GERONIMO: The code name for the operation to kill Osama bin Laden was Geronimo. This code name has been criticized for it's racial stereotyping of the Native American Indians, linking the Native Americans to the international rebel Osama bin Laden. (7) (8)

*THREATENING MOVE & FEAR: “Osama bin laden was not armed but did put up resistance when U.S. forces stormed a compound outside Islamabad & killed him”. “Bin Laden was shot when he made a threatening move”. (9) Question: What was the threatening move & resistance that Osama bin Laden made to satisfy the Rules of Engagement & to justify killing him? “The terrorist leader was killed by American commandos who burst into his room & feared he was reaching for a nearby weapon, U.S. officials said”. (10) Question: Should the military base their actions on the emotion of Fear? Also, how far away was this nearby weapon? – 3 feet, 5 feet or 10 feet away?

*LAWFUL & LEGITIMATE: “Attorney General Eric Holder … declared the operation “Lawful, legitimate & appropriate”. (11) Question: What would be an unlawful & illegitimate operation against Osama bin Laden?

*RULES of ENGAGEMENT:

DEADLY FORCE Used Against a PERSON by an AGGRESSOR/INTRUDER:

*AGGRESSORS: ”You can't claim self defense If you are the aggressor, which means you started the fight. You must act honestly & conscientiously, not from anger, malice or revenge. You must not provoke or intentionally bring an attack on yourself just so you can claim self defense as an excuse for using force, deadly or otherwise”. “If you intentionally cause the death of another human being … , you can be charged with murder”. (12)

*CASTLE DOCTRINE & SELF-DEFENSE: The Castle Doctrine states that “One's place of residence (is) a place in which one enjoys protection from illegal trespassing & violent attack. It then goes on to give a person the legal right to use deadly force to defend that place/(castle) … from violent attack or an intrusion which may lead to a violent attack”. (13)

* PAKISTAN 'S CRITICISM: ” Pakistan formally criticized the ( U.S. ) raid (on bin Laden in Islamabad ), calling it an ‘Unauthorized unilateral action'”. (14)

*The CELEBRATIONS:

*BEER & GOOD CHEER & TWEETS: “Celebrations erupted near the White House in Washington & ground zero in New York when news of Osama bin Laden's death was reported & tweeted”. Weeks asks: “Is it ever a good idea – from a spiritual or philosophical standpoint – to celebrate with beer & good cheer over the death of anyone, even a widely acknowledged monster?” (15)

*DANCING in the STREETS: New Yorkers danced in the streets after bin Laden's death. (16)

*SMOKING CIGARS & CHEST-THUMPING CHANTS: “After President Barack Obama announced that al-Qaida leader Osama bin laden had been shot dead in Pakistan, ebullient crowds gathered outside the White House & at New York's Ground Zero to cheer the demise of the world's most-wanted terrorist, smoking cigars & breaking into chest-thumping chants of ‘USA, USA'”. “'What if we responded in reverent prayer & quiet introspection instead of patriotic frenzy?'” (17) “'A Christian never rejoices' in the death of any man, no matter how evil” a Vatican spokesman said. (18)

*REJOICING, VICTORY & TRIUMPH: “The Roman Catholic Church responded to the news of bin Laden's death with this statement: ‘Faced with the death of a man, a Christian never rejoices, but reflects on the serious responsibility of everyone … that every event is … an opportunity (not for) hatred, but for peace”. “Some people are concerned that such public displays of elation – similar to those following a sports victory or a political election – will create more animosity & even greater danger.” “A former FBI agent states: The reasons (the Arab world) hate(s) us have not subsided & this could reinvigorate things”. Christine Korsgaard, a philosophy professor at Harvard University states: “If we have any feeling of victory or triumph in (bin Laden's case) it should be because we have succeeded in disabling him (from unjust acts) – not because he is dead”. (19) *CHAMPAGNE: Restaurants & Bars celebrated Osama Bin Laden's death by offering drink specials such as champagne. (20)

*ROT in HELL: In response to Osama bin Laden's death, “One newspaper headline eulogy read, ‘Rot in Hell'”. Regarding the morality of the killing of a person: “The Quran … teaches reverence for every life, even the most repugnant ones”. “The death of a person should be observed in a respectful & solemn way”. (21)

*REVENGE for the KILLING of OSAMA BIN LADEN:

*NUCLEAR REVENGE: The “Mastermind of the 9/11 terror plot told interrogators at Guantanamo Bay that Al Qaeda has a nuclear bomb somewhere in Europe & (it) would detonate it if Usama bin Laden was ever captured or killed, the Daily Telegraph reported, citing WikiLeaks cables.” (22)

*AVENGE the KILLING: ”In Washington , CIA director Leon Panetta warned that ‘Terrorists almost certainly will attempt to avenge' the killing” of Osama bin Laden. (23) *AVENGE the MARTYRDOM: “'Let me make it very clear that we will avenge the martyrdom of Osama bin laden & we will do it by carrying out attacks in Pakistan & America . We will teach them an exemplary lesson' Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan said”. (24)

*COUNTERPUNCH: ”Al Qaida is much stronger than it was on 9/11 despite the death of Osama bin laden & it's a virtual certainty that the growing terrorist group will launch a major revenge attack' according to … former CIA bin Laden expert Michael Scheuer”. “A revenge attack from al-Qaida against American or Western targets is ‘certain'. … They will counterpunch”. (25)

*REVENGE for BURIAL VIOLATION: ”Muslim clerics said … that Osama bin Laden's burial at sea was a violation of Islamic tradition that may further provoke militant calls for revenge attacks against American targets”. “The Americans want to humiliate Muslims through this burial”. A Muslim cleric called the sea burial a “'Strategic mistake' that was bound to stoke rage”. (26)

*WARNING: David Swanson warns regarding Bin Laden's killing & the “Dancing in the street to celebrate death”: “Killing will lead only to more killing”. (27)

*A BOTCHED OPERATION, AGENDAS & A LOST OPPORTUNITY :

*“No explanation has been provided for why an unarmed bin laden, in the absence of a firefight, was murdered by the SEALs with a shot to the head. For those who believe the government's story that ‘We got bin Laden', the operation can only appear as the most botched operation in history.” Why did we “Needlessly kill bin Laden instead of capturing him”? – “The most valuable intelligence asset on the planet?” Before bin Laden's death the President's approval ratings were poor; Then with bin Laden's death there was a rise in the poll numbers. “In Washington-think a 24% rise in approval rating justifies a staged event”. (28) Rather than killing Osama bin Laden, In my opinion the more noble & rational act would have been to take bin Laden into custody, charge him with a crime, give him a fair trail, issue a verdict & If found guilty, then sentence him.

*II. WHAT IS the APPROPRIATE RESPONSE to VIOLENCE such as 9/11?

* AMERICA 'S LUST for REVENGE of 9/11: “Since 9/11/2001 , due to the lust for revenge of the people of the U.S. , hundreds of thousands of innocent Islamic people are dead. These human beings were killed in our name. Be very careful when you proclaim: ‘I'm glad ‘we' got bin Laden. He deserved it'. Be very grateful most of us don't get what we deserve”. (29)

*The AMERICAN PETRO-IMPERIAL REVENGE MACHINE: “The American petro-imperial revenge machine reached it's mass-murderous apex (in response to 9/11) … in the Iraqi city of Fallujah in April 2004. That's when (America) responded to the killing of (Americans) with a quasi-genocidal assault that included the criminal bombing (including hyper-lethal cluster-bombing), mortaring, napalming, gassing & shooting of civilians, the destruction of hospitals & clinics & the targeting of ambulances. U.S. snipers boasted of killing anyone they could get in their sites & the ( U.S. ) tossed grenades into civilian homes. The assault considerably out-did al Qaeda's 9/11 death count”. The U.S. has “Routinely & preposterously justified disgraceful actions in the Middle East … as ‘Revenge for 9/11'”. “The lethal, mass-murderous U.S. response to 9/11 has increased the Islamist terror threat to Americans & others by deepening the Arab & Muslim worlds' alienation from the U.S. & the West”. (30)

*HUMILITY: Yoder warns: “It is not easy or comfortable to look at the history of those who hurt us. What often emerges is that our enemy acted out of anger, fear and…being wronged or victimized”. It is important to understand what motivates the enemy, to hear their story & to understand the root causes of violence. Yoder asks: “What if in the awful days after 9/11, our U.S. leaders, the President, our governors, mayors, clergy and health professionals – had normalized our feelings of anger, bewilderment, humiliation, horror, and the desire for justice”…”What if they had displayed a greatness born of humility?” (31)

*RESTRAINT: Dalai Lama explains: “Human conflicts do not arise out of the blue…If we instinctively retaliate when violence is done to us, what we can expect…(is) that our opponent …also feel(s) justified (in) retaliat(ing). This is how violence escalates”. Dalai Lama also states: “Terrorism cannot be overcome by the use of force because (using force) does not address the complex underlying problems”. Regarding 9/11 the Dalai Lama urged: “Restraint”, “Not to seek a brutal revenge” & “To think rationally”. His Holiness cites possible causes of violence & terrorism including: Colonialism, discrimination, poverty & oppression. (32)

*CAUSE & EFFECT: Satish Kumar states: “Events are never isolated. September 11 did not happen…without cause or reason….Are there seeds of this event in the Gulf War…?” (33)

*SHOULD WE NEGOTIATE with TERRORISTS? Currie states in his article on this topic: “A refusal to negotiate (with terrorists) indicates rejection of the other side & rejection creates serious … obstacles to problem-solving -- because it prevents clear communication from taking place & it guarantees defensiveness & resistance to change”. (34)

*REVENGE & TERRORISM:

*Cycles of Revenge between the West & the Middle East , between terrorists & non-terrorists -- poison our relationships & endanger our lives.

*REVENGE: DEFINITION:

“Revenge is a primitive destructive & violent response to anger, injury or humiliation”. “The goal of revenge is to erase shame & humiliation & restore pride”, “Honor” & “Dignity”. (35)

*JUSTICE, The Code Word for Revenge: President Obama stated that with the killing of Osama bin Laden “Justice has been done”. (36) Question: Was the killing of bin Laden: truly Justice or was it Revenge? In my opinion: If by the word Justice, an angry society punishes an offender with the intent: To harm, shame, humiliate or kill -- as payback for a past injustice -- then that society is executing an act of revenge. It is this type of merciless, sadistic, eye-for-an-eye society that falsely uses the dignified word Justice to hide it's true intent of Revenge.

*CYCLES of REVENGE: The Middle East & the West are engaging in cycles of revenge & perpetuating a violent relationship of terrorism & counter-terrorism. Bjorgo discusses the “Factors sustaining terrorism” which include: “Cycles of Revenge”: (Both sides) “Try to outdo each other in taking revenge to satisfy their respective constituencies”. (37)

*IS REVENGE EVER JUSTIFIED? Is America 's desire for revenge for 9/11 justified? Is Al Qaida's desire for revenge for it's perceived injustices justified?

*Viktor Frankl states in his book Man's Search for Meaning: “No one has the right to do wrong, not even if wrong has been done to them.” (38)

*QUESTION: Can the West & the Middle East rise to a higher level of wisdom & exercise restraint in response to violence & Not seek revenge?

*ALTERNATIVES to REVENGE: Can America & the Middle East seek alternatives to the cycles of revenge that have defined our current relationship?

*NO REVENGE & ENLIGHTENMENT: Eve Ensler states regarding the Middle East & West relationship: “Real power is about being bigger than revenge…& it requires every part of our being to say: I'm not going to hit you back. I'm going to take a breath & find what within me is larger & has the power to enlighten”. (39)

*LOVE: “Turning the other Cheek is a phrase in Christian doctrine that refers to responding to an aggressor without violence.” Jesus in the Love Your Enemies Sermon said: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray” for those who mistreat you. (40)

*OTHER ALTERNATIVES to REVENGE: Alternatives to revenge include: Forgiveness, Legal recourse, Constructive revenge (bettering oneself), Constructive dialogue with the aggressor. (41)

III . The NEW GANDHI:

*The NEW GANDHI: The international leader who resists the angry, revengeful urge to kill in the name of justice (code word for revenge) -- & who does Not kill the enemy -- will be the New Gandhi. The international leader who is rational & who does Not kill the enemy – will be the new peacemaker, the true Nobel Peace Prize winner.

*Who will be the New Gandhi -- Who will stop the cycle of violence & revenge between the West & the Middle East ?

* AMERICA 'S LOST OPPORTUNITY .

*9/11 REVENGE: If America was rational, overcame it's emotions about 9/11 & did not get revenge -- If America used restraint, showed mercy & did not kill Osama bin Laden -- then America would have become the New Gandhi. If America gave bin Laden the right to a fair trial, then America would have truly won the Nobel Peace Prize. America would have risen to a higher level of Homo Sapiens. America had the chance to stop the violence between the West & the Middle East . American had the chance to extend to the Middle East a gesture of conciliation & an olive branch of peace. America failed to be a peacemaker. Now the cycle of revenge & violence will continue.

*PARADIGM SHIFT: Is it possible for humans to undergo a paradigm shift in resolving conflicts & Rather than solve conflicts with Violence – Is it possible for Homo Sapiens to solve conflicts with dialogue & negotiation & gestures of conciliation? In my opinion the raid on Osama bin Laden of 5/1/11 in Islamabad , Pakistan represents a lost opportunity to understand our enemy Osama Bin Laden & his intelligence information. It is better to try to understand the enemy than to hate him. For hate begets hate & violence begets violence. Given the events of 5/1/11 , the cycle of revenge between the Middle East & the West will continue. As Jesus said: “Those who live by the sword die by the sword”. (42) America lost the opportunity to stop this cycle of violence: America had the choice to arrest bin Laden – but America chose to kill him. We opted out of the path of Non-Violence & we chose Violence with our Nobel Peace Prize. Now we must accept the consequences of our Violent actions that sought a false justice.

*ZEN TRANSFORMATION: Will the next victim of injustice pause in a zen moment of transformation, rise above revenge &: #1. Seek the rule of law/justice, #2. Just walk away from the violence or #3. Initiate dialogue & offer a gesture of peace to an Offender?

*WHY DO HUMANS KILL for REVENGE?, The HUMAN EGO & EGO DEATH:

*In my opinion, Humans kill enemies to get revenge for past injustices. Why do people choose revenge rather than other alternatives to injustice? It is the Human Ego & it's attitude of Superiority over others that drives the act of revenge. Perhaps the international community can embrace Cohen's concept of “Ego death” when the “will of the separate ego has finally been broken” and we go beyond “self-concern” & “unconsciousness” to a “spiritual awakening” & unity. (43) Can we practice the Buddhist concept of: “Anatta: i.e.: “Not-self, non-ego, egolessness”? (44) Can the West & the Middle East overcome our dangerous egos and stop celebrating the killing of enemies?

*TRUCE/HUDNA: DEFINITION: Can the West & the Middle East offer each other a Truce? Note: By the word “truce”: I mean a permanent end to violence – replaced by conflict resolution methods such as negotiation & mediation. The New York Times article by Yousef titled: Pause for Peace 2006: states that: “A truce is referred to in Arabic as a ‘Hudna'. … Hudna goes beyond the Western concept of a ceasefire & obliges the parties…to seek a permanent, nonviolent resolution to their differences…Whereas war dehumanizes the enemy & makes it easier to kill, a hudna affords the opportunity to humanize one's opponents & understand their position with the goal of resolving the…dispute”. (45) Can the Middle East & the West treat each other with respect? Can we acknowledge the humanity of each other? Are the West & the Middle East fated to live lives of revenge? Can we evolve beyond Newton 's 3 rd law of physics? – Or will each act of revenge result in another retaliatory act of revenge? (46) Can the Middle East & the West evolve beyond our perceived wrongdoings & injustices & use diplomacy to negotiate peace?

*TRYING to UNDERSTAND our ENEMIES: The PSYCHOLOGY of TERRORISTS: *What Motivated Osama bin Laden to perpetrate his acts of terrorism? Perlman offers her view on the psychology of terrorists: “The first stage in the development of terrorism begins when intolerable life conditions cause suffering that produces internal psychological changes in people …(i.e. a) psychological mutation, a malignant alteration in the personality. …Intolerable affects that are not treated cannot be endured. Failure to respond to repeated trauma, humiliation & suffering produces utter hopelessness. When cries for help are not heeded, people are plunged into the depths of despair – an abyss …When appropriate methods of trying to get help do not work, people resort to deviant, destructive measures to receive attention, relief of suffering & justice. ” (47) Can we all pause for a moment, put our egos aside & consider the suffering of our enemies?

*CONFLICT RESOLUTION: Regarding conflicts with our enemies, We all have the choice to: #1. Kill our enemies, #2. We can seek Justice/the rule or law, #3. We can walk away from conflicts or #4. We can offer our enemies a truce & a gesture of peace.

*SOLUTION to the PROBLEM of REVENGE: LOVE YOUR ENEMIES:

*JESUS: Jesus stated: “Love your enemies & pray for those who persecute you”. (48) *MARTIN LUTHER KING: Martin Luther King in his Love Your Enemy speech stated: “You refuse to do anything that will defeat an individual … Hate begets hate … & It is all a descending spiral, ultimately ending in destruction for all. … Somebody must have sense enough & morality enough to cut off the chain of hate & the chain of evil in the universe. & You do that by love” … Don't do anything to embarrass (your enemies). Just keep loving them. & by the power of your love, (their hate) will break down”. (49)
