What Are Muslims Doing With 9/11?

By Mike Ghouse

The Silent majority of American Muslims feel enough is enough. It is time to speak up while doing the right thing. For years, they have been doing their darnedest to be positive participants and contributors to the well being of America, thanks to a substantial majority of Americans who understand and help in the efforts. A well known saying goes, “if you want the best outcome for the world, stroke the positive in people”.

American Muslims through the World Muslim Congress are committed to promote Pluralism and coexistence in partnership with the Foundation for Pluralism.

What does it take to be a good Citizen? Some fourteen hundred years ago, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) followed three simple principles to become great and humane being – to be truthful, trust worthy and the peacemaker; indeed he was called Al-Amin, a summation of the three qualities. He was trusted by all the tribes, even those at odds with each other, they could count on him to always be truthful. Much before the advent of Islam, once the sacred black corner stone called Aswad fell off the wall of the Kaaba, the sacred center of Mecca. The infighting among the tribes began as to who would be privileged to place the stone back in its place, as the conflict grew, they called upon Muhammad (the truthful and just) to find the solution.

Muhammad was inherently a peace maker, and strove for peace among the communities. He laid out a sheet long enough on its perimeter for each one of the tribal leaders to place a hand on the sheet to lift the stone. He placed the stone in the middle of the sheet and had every one participate in lifting the stone up to set it in the wall. Thus he created a model of inclusiveness and co-existence.

Following this model of inclusive cooperation, Muslims are a part of American multi textured fabric to contribute to the well being and prosperity of America.

Unity day USA is the expression of that desire. It is a day to honor fellow Americans who sacrificed their lives for peace and justice for all, on the Sunday before 9/11. As suggested by Congressman Pete Sessions, it is a day of Unity for all Americans to pledge to the peace, prosperity, unity and security of our nation.

Muslims are pleased to initiate Annual Unity Day USA. On this Unity Day USA, we, the people of the United States of America; of every faith, race, ethnicity, culture and background, gather to pray for peace, prosperity, unity and security of our nation.

The third annual Unity Day USA took place on Sunday, September 9th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Addison, Texas.

The following dignitaries attended the event: Addison Mayor Joe Chow; Carrollton Mayor Becky Miller; Frisco Mayor Mike Simpson; Plano, Mayor Pat Evens; and Richardson Mayor Pro-tem Bob Townsend. Daisy Khan was the keynote speaker.

Our theme this year is One Nation under creation. Twelve religious prayer leaders from Apache, Bahai to Zoroastrians and everyone in between will seek guidance and wisdom from their respective faiths. Our Civil servants and community leaders will echo the same sentiment and suggest ways in which we as individuals can work toward building cohesive and harmonious local communities.

As Americans we uphold, protect, defend and celebrate the values enshrined in our constitution. All our faiths reinforce the creed of "One Nation under God, with liberty and justice for all." It is a dream come true for American Muslims.
