The Discredited Prime Minister’s Unloved Visit To Tamil Nadu

By People’s Movemenmt Against Nuclear Energy

01 August, 2013
Countercurrents.org

The People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) would like to protest against the visit of the Indian Prime Minister to Tamil Nadu on August 2, 2013 to open a multi-crore power plant piping unit at BHEL at Thirumayam in Pudukottai district, Tamil Nadu. This is a desperate, last minute pre-election stunt to show that the UPA government is actually engaging in some development activities in the much-neglected state of Tamil Nadu.

If the Prime Minister takes time off to open a 350-crore project in Tamil Nadu, the PMANE and the struggling people in and around Koodankulam would like to know why he does not want to come down and open the 18,000-crore Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP). After all, this corrupt and scandalous nuclear power project that has used shoddy and substandard equipment from Russia is a pet and favored project of the nuclear-lover Prime Minister who has signed nuclear deals with a whole array of countries and companies all over the world.

It is only right and appropriate that the Prime Minister inaugurates or at least visits the Koodankulam plant that is considered to be the corner stone of his deadly and radioactive “Brave New Nuclear India” plan. Why can’t he come and reassure the protesting people about the KKNPP’s quality and safety? After all, KKNPP is the largest and longest-built project of his own ministry that will open up more such opportunities for his Masters in Russia, United States, France and so on. Why is he not coming? Why is he chickening out? Is he afraid that he will be held liable and accountable for all the financial improprieties, corruption, scandals and the usage of substandard components at the KKNPP? Is he not sure about the integrity and safety of the Russian plants? Is the project not running hale and hearty as his officials have been claiming? If the KKNPP is a civil nuclear cooperation project, why should there be so much secrecy and opacity about it?

It is not surprising that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has never respected Indian people’s feelings and sentiments, or views and values as he has never been elected by the people for any post in his entire political life. If he is loyal to the people of India and committed to the safety and well-being of the citizens of this country, this Atomic Energy minister should release the

>> Site Evaluation Report (SER),

>> Safety Analysis Report (SAR), and the

>> Inter-Governmental Agreement (IAG) on Liability signed in 2008 by the Russian and Indian governments.

After all, the Central Information Commissioner (CIC) in New Delhi has already ruled categorically that the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) should share the SER and SAR with the people of India. And the project-affected people have the legitimate right to know what their government has decided about liability in case something happened at the Koodankulam nuclear project. If Dr. Singh, his corrupt government and the discredited DAE do not want to share these reports with the people of India, it means they are purposely and willfully hiding some extremely important information that has serious ramifications for the safety and security of the people of India, particularly Tamil Nadu.

The Prime Minister and Atomic Energy minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, must break his deafening and disturbing silence and speak out. If he chooses to ignore our demand as he has been dismissing the Indian citizens’ concerns about all different important issues such as the FDI, GAIL pipeline, Methane project, Neutrino project, and the Sri Lankan genocide in Tamil Eelam, he, his government and his Congress Party will be held responsible for any untoward outcomes at Koodankulam.

So the PMANE joins millions and millions of Tamil people in opposing the discredited Prime Minister’s unloved visit to our State. We observe a Black Day on August 2 here at Idinthakarai.
