October 8, Day Of Action In Koodankulam

Dear Sirs:

Greetings! As you may probably know, we are holding a siege protest around the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) on the sea on October 8, 2012 with the following demands:
[1] Withdraw the police from all our villages;
[2] Release all our comrades who are in prison;
[3] Withdraw all the false cases against us; and
[4] Scrap the KKNPP and convert it into a people/Nature/future-friendly project.

We plan to organize the protest 500 meters away from the KKNPP by laying buoys and placing our own fiber boats as the boundary. It would be a peaceful, nonviolent and democratic protest just like all our earlier programs over the past 415 days. We will not engage in any kind of violence against any individuals or private or public properties as we do not treat anyone as our enemy. We have always stuck to this principle and treated the government officials and police officers with respect. In fact, on September 9, 2012 our people offered water to the lady police officers when some of them fell ill and engaged in friendly conversation with the others. It was the police lathi charge on September 10, 2012 that caused all the havoc and mayhem.

We would very much like to request you and other authorities to treat our people as responsible and mature Indian citizens with Constitutionally-guaranteed rights and entitlements. Such a positive approach and attitude on both sides will help us manage the siege protest peacefully without any untoward incidents.

With best personal regards to you both,

Cordially,

S. P. Udayakumar, Ph.D.
