Tony Blair Accepts His Mistake In Iraq War, But Puts Blame On Bad "Intelligence"

By Dr. Vivek Kumar Srivastava

Countercurrents.org

At last former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has accepted that it was responsibility of those who removed regime in 2003 in Iraq which led to emergence of Islamic State in the region and the situation prevailing in 2015. He although laid the onus of burden on the intelligence that led to the invasion in Iraq.

This is half truth. In fact Tony Blair was only seconding to the ill devised policies of US former president George Bush Junior who wanted to remove Saddam Hussein at any cost, an ambition harboured by his father George Bush Senior since the days of gulf war in 1990s. The propaganda of WMD was created and Hans Blix commission visited Iraq for the purpose. Hans Blix in his briefing to Security Council had stated that “how much, if any, is left of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and related proscribed items and programmes? So far, UNMOVIC has not found any such weapons, only a small number of empty chemical munitions, which should have been declared and destroyed (and)Intelligence information has been useful for UNMOVIC. In one case, it led us to a private home where documents mainly relating to laser enrichment of uranium were found. In other cases, intelligence has led to sites where no proscribed items were found. Even in such cases, however, inspection of these sites were useful in proving the absence of such items and in some cases the presence of other items - conventional munitions. It showed that conventional arms are being moved around the country and that movements are not necessarily related to weapons of mass destruction. (Hans Blix's briefing to the Security Council, The Guardian, Friday 14 February 2003)

The presence of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) were not evidenced but on this pretext USA and its major ally Great Britain invaded Iraq. Saddam Hussein regime was full of atrocities but the pretext for its removal revealed the real objectives of these powers.

Several studies and scholars have blamed USA and UK for their misadventures in Iraq but so far no acceptance was ever made by any of these leaders about their ill fated decision which has placed human civilization against to scourge of terrorism.

Major understanding is now that: Bush and Blair both are responsible for bringing this state of affair where terrorism at the global level and in MENA has become sharper than before. Hence they must be asked to bear their responsibility for committing such act against the human civilization.
Blair should not throw the ball in the court of intelligence failure. He must own responsibility at his own level as British PM holds absolute discretionary power and is main decision and policy maker.

Next human society and nation states should devise new methods to contain the misadventures in global politics. UNO like institutions are losing their relevance as they fail to address the impact of power politics and its evil consequences at the global level. There is greater need of reformation of UNO. Developing and underdeveloped countries need to be allocated more decision making power. Otherwise world may move anytime in the catastrophic state due to ill devised polices of such immatured leaders.

Moreover world should understand that leaders at the helm of affairs are not so much intelligent as they are supposed to be. They must be evaluated consistently and criticized for their actions, if these are full of follies, by the global community.

It needs to be emphasized that in international politics the whims of leaders should be opposed by the other nation states. It is not easy task but can be conceptualized with the help of collaborative efforts. As in Syria Russia has succeeded in the prevention of further gains by IS.

Lastly leaders responsible for the growth of IS and terrorism in the world should be made accountable for the same.

Major conclusion is that root cause of all the evils at the global level is poor formulation of the critical policies. It happens due to personal interests as US had against to Iraq, national interests as UK had thought that second ladder helper to US will serve its interests, albeit now it has realized its folly and is trying to move towards China under the leadership of Cameron.

International politics cannot be run on the whims of the leaders. Second World War was caused due to whims of Hitler. Many politicians at the global level are egotist and exhibit themselves as democrat but are dictator at the psychological level. All needs to understand their real intentions to save this world.
