Chennai, Sept 21(TruthDive): Chief Minister Jayalalitha told the representatives of the members of the movement against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) that a Cabinet resolution against the plant would be passed. ‘As we got an assurance from her to that effect we called off our protest,’ one of the coordinators of the protest movement,” said.

‘For the past 10 years, people were aware of the dangers of the plant. But after seeing the fate of the nuclear plant in Fukushima in Japan after the tsunami, people have become more conscious of the dangers posed by these plants.’

The other factor for the protests was the fishing ban within a 500-metre radius of the power plant which upset the fishing community,” he said. Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs V Narayanasamy today said ‘as an emissary of the Prime Minster I called on the protestors against Koodankulam Nuclear power project yesterday. I briefed the Chief Minister about the meeting’.

‘Jayalalitha also expressed her views on the issue. I will now apprise the Prime Minister of the developments and my meeting with the Tamilnadu Chief Minister’.

Narayanasamy, who reached Chennai yesterday, held talks with the agitating locals against the nuclear plant. Speaking after his meeting, Narayanasamy said he would convey the feelings of the people to the Prime Minister.

Fear of losing lives and livelihood is a major concern of the people. They also say that they were not consulted before the project was finalized. I will convey their apprehensions to the Prime Minister,’ he said.

In reply to a query, he said though the Centre had drawn up plans to generate 40,000 MW through nuclear energy by 2020, the safety of the people was of utmost importance.’There can be no compromise on safety. I have urged them to give up their fast. I am hopeful of a solution’, he added.
