On The Road To Copenhagen
And A World Food Crisis

By Robert Palmer

04 January, 2010
OpEdnews.com

Does the following analysis sound familiar?

“A weakening U.S. dollar is putting upward pressure on oil prices. The shock produced chaos in the West. In the United States, the retail price of a gallon of gasoline rose 50%, consumption dropped by 6.1% from September to February. Underscoring the interdependence of the world societies and economies, oil-importing nations in the noncommunist industrial world saw sudden inflation and economic recession. The energy crisis led to greater interest in renewable energy and spurred research in solar power and wind power as well as increased interest in mass transit.”

If you said it sounds like 2008, when it took $5.00/gallon gasoline to get Americans to agree to offshore drilling and give up their last Arctic Wilderness, you would be wrong.

It was 1973, when the Arab oil embargo and long gas lines got Americans to authorize the 800 mile Trans-Alaska Pipeline through some of the most pristine country in Alaska.

What would our economy and climate change look like today if we had not chosen to build, build, build the Alaska Pipe Line?

Denmark was also badly hammered by the 1973 Arab oil embargo. But unlike America, it responded to the crisis in such a sustained, focused and systematic way, that today Denmark is energy independent. And it didn’t happen by Danish politicians didn’t make their people stupid by telling them the solution was simply more offshore drilling.

Did Danes suffer from their government shaping the market with energy taxes to stimulate innovations in clean power? In one word, said Connie Hedegaard, Denmark’s minister of climate and energy: “No.” Denmark’s exports of energy efficiency products have tripled.

“It is one of our fastest-growing export areas and the reason that unemployment in Denmark today is 1.6 percent”, said Hedegaard.

And of course Denmark’s solutions addressed climate change 31 years ago.

Imagine if the US, the largest polluter in the world until 2007, had prevented billions of tons of CO2 from reaching the atmosphere, we wouldn’t have a climate change crisis to go with our energy, financial and 2010 Food Crisis.

2010 Food Crisis for Dummies by Eric deCarbonnel

“The 2010 Food Crisis is different. It is THE CRISIS. The one that makes all doomsday scenarios come true. The government bailouts and central bank interventions, which have held the financial world together during the last two years, will be powerless to prevent the 2010 Food Crisis from bringing the global financial system to its knees.” [1]

“…will be powerless to prevent the 2010 Food Crisis from bringing the global financial system to its knees.”

Eric should have written:

“the powerful willed the 2008 financial and 2010 Food Crisis to bankrupt the middle class and starve the third world.

Full Unemployment and a Food Crisis are on track for 2010.

The impending Food Crisis didn’t start in 2008, 2002 or even 2000 but in 1973.

In 1973, President Richard Nixon and the rest of the U.S. government, did not promote environmental alternatives to our dependence on fossil fuels but instead came up with Biofuels and a plan to pay Archer Daniels Midland Corporation to turn 450 pounds of corn into the fuel for the 25-gallon tank in our SUV.

The small LCD at the gas pump should show an emaciated person starving to death because the food he needed to survive is being burned up so you can drive your car to the mall.

"It is a crime against humanity to convert agricultural productive soil into soil which produces food stuff that will be turned into Biofuels," says Jean Ziegler, the U.N. special Rapporteur. [2]

Dr. Pimentel, Cornell professor and White House advisor, has warned every administration since Richard Nixon that ethanol and biofuels could not be a solution to the oil crisis because:

Over 140% more energy-mostly high value oil and natural gas, is expended to produce a gallon of corn ethanol than is in the ethanol itself. [3]

Since the advent of biofuels, the global emergency food grain reserves have shrunk from a marginal 120-day supply to a critical 57-day buffer in 2006 and now, according to some sources, a zero-day supply in 2009. [4]

When the emergency food grain reserve had a 57-day buffer, the poor in the Third World were, according to UN FAO and WHO statistics, starving to death at the rate of between 25,000 and 40,000 each day. [5]

Capitalism, No Love Story a Call for Revolution

Michael “white tennis shoe” Moore has seen the enemy and it is Wall Street and Goldman Sachs.

Should we trust Michael Moore to tell us who our enemy is? The truth about Michael Moore was at www.moorelies.com but someone took it down. No problem, as of today you can still buy the book: Michael Moore Is a Big Fat Stupid White Man.

Bob and Harvey Weinstein produced the Love Story with a $1 billion fund from you guessed it….Goldman Sachs. [6]

The purpose of the movie is no secret. Moore lays it out in terms even a child can understand: “grab your torches and pitchforks... and rise up or else—“he's (Michael) done making movies.”

We are being conditioned, brainwashed and manipulated to rise up against The Powers That Be (TPTB).

Should we fall for this ruse and start a revolution?

In 1968 the Beatles released a double album called the White Album. On that album there is a song called “Revolution”. John Lennon wrote the song not as a call to arms but as personal statement to the demonstrators. [7]

“So you say you want a revolution, well you know, we all want to change the world…when you talk about destruction brother you can count me out…you better free your mind instead”

I know not what course others may take, but as for me if it’s a choice between Revolution, Starvation and the Swine FLU Shot give me Death.

[2] Much of the current acceleration in that disparity, and the increasing third world hunger that results from it, is a direct bi-product of the ill-advised and misleadingly-promoted bio-fuel revolution in the industrialized world.

The price of corn jumped 85% since 2002 due to corn/ethanol inflation.

Several studies by economists at the World Bank and elsewhere suggest that the number of food-insecure people in the world rises by over 16 million for every percentage increase in the real prices of staple foods. That means, they suggest, that 1.2 billion people could be chronically hungry by 2025. But those numbers are extremely conservative. How Biofuels Could Starve the Poor, C. Ford Runge and Benjamin Senauer, May/June 2007

[3] "Corn Ethanol Allure Plummets", Cornell University, Dr. David Pimentel produced his initial study as chairman of the Gasohol Study Group, a task force convened by the Reagan Administration in 1980 to investigate the efficiency of ethanol production. David Pimentel released a startling study for the United States Department of Energy showing that making ethanol consumes far more energy than the ethanol contains. The United States Department of Agriculture, food giant Archer-Daniel-Midlands and others in the corn lobby vilified him, and congressmen from corn states demanded that the federal government's watchdog, the General Accounting Office, thoroughly investigate his findings. The GAO spent 20 times as much money reviewing Dr. Pimentel's work as Dr. Pimentel's own team did in creating the original study. After dissecting his methodology and scrutinizing every figure, the GAO, too, endorsed Dr. Pimentel's study.

[5] Some statistics are truly alarming. More than 780 million people — 20% of the developing world — are chronically undernourished. About 190 million children under five years of age, including more than 150 million in Asia and 27 million in Africa, suffer from protein-energy malnutrition. Every day, 40 000 children under the age of five die, and malnutrition is a major contributing factor. Some 2000 million people in more than 100 developing countries suffer from micronutrient deficiencies that can lead to blind-ness, mental retardation, and even death.
