On Behalf

By Gunther Ostermann

19 August, 2007
Countercurrents.org

The race is on, to claim and exploit the Earth’s treasures, by many nations in the northern hemisphere, May I suggest a resolution by ALL nations, ON BEHALF of future generation, who cannot speak for themselves, to declare the whole region beyond the 85th latitude a legacy, off limits to all gas, oil and mineral exploitation. Leave it unmarred, except for the hole J made by the Russian flag on the North Pole. Any dig could create a frenzy that might be unstoppable with dire consequences.

Planet Earth will still be around for millions of years; what gives us the right to chop down and dig out, whatever there is left, to chop and dig, in the course of a century? And that includes species extinction through habitat loss, for the same reason.

Let us explore the why and how of life and nature instead, rationally, of which we know next to nothing. We simply cannot carry on as usual, as our wasteful and destructive ways are diminishing the lives for our progeny!

Let us speak ON BEHALF of those who cannot speak for themselves, and that includes those who are living now.
