Moldovan and Ukrainian authorities
have blockaded the small nation of Transdnestria on all borders, bringing
about criticism from Russia and requests for humanitarian aid from Transdnestria's
leftist government.
According to Russian media,
Russia's ambassador to Moldova accused Moldovan authorities of trying
to overthrow Transdnestria's government and replace it with a "more
pliable administration", while South Ossetia's parliament issued
a statement criticizing the Ukraine. It also indicated that Russian
troops in Transdnestria had been put on a heightened state of alert.
Meanwhile, Transdnestria's
President warned of severe humanitarian issues and called for assistance
from Russia and Belarus. However, the Russian News & Information
Agency reported that the Ukraine had demanded that a convoy of Russian
trucks carrying humanitarian aid to Transdnestria only travel at night,
remove Russian symbols, and change their travel route.
Some analysts consider attempts
by pro-Western authorities in the Ukraine and Moldova to destroy Transdnestria's
economy and government as part of an American and European plan to eliminate
Russian influence in the region. Transdnestria, also known as Transdnestr,
is an independent pro-Western republic in Eastern Europe which borders
the Ukraine and Moldova. It is not recognized by many countries and
only appears as the eastern half of Moldova on most maps.
