Message Of An Iranian
To American people

By Borhan Azemi

18 October, 2006
Countercurrents.org

I am an Iranian activist who is outraged by the big lies of the Bush regime that has led this country to invade Iraq, wiretap its citizens and make torture legal under the so-called “War on Terrorism.”

I was in Iran in 1979 when a revolution overthrew the US backed monarchy - the Pahlavi dynasty. From 1953, when a US coup*1 brought the King to power, until the 1979 revolution, we lived under the heel of the US sponsored regime of the Shah. Iranians suffered from US sponsored dictatorship, torture and executions, and the theft of the country’s oil reserves. When we finally were able to put an end to that, our revolution for freedom and independence was stopped short by the US and its European allies, who maneuvered to continue exploitation and neo-colonialism in Iran through the theocratic government of the Ayatollahs (the outmoded Islamic Republic of Iran).

Now, the vast majority of Iranians are in opposition to both major poles in the world today: the pole of US Imperialism, imposing colonialism, exploitation and oppression through military force around the world, and the pole of the Jihadist Islamic Fundamentalists, who claim to be standing up for the oppressed against the US, but truly only represent a small fraction of the population of the Middle East and are a throwback to an outmoded society. Both these forces represent the past, not the future. Iranians, having lived under the rule of both, sometimes at the same time, know from experience that these two reactionary poles reinforce each other, even while opposing each other.

In his annual State of the Union address on February 3, 2005, George Bush said:

“To the Iranian people, I say tonight: As you stand for your own liberty, America stands with you.”

And in his 2006 State of the Union address, the Emperor had another message for us:

“Tonight, let me speak directly to the citizens of Iran: America respects you, and we respect your country. We respect your right to choose your own future and win your own freedom. And our nation hopes one day to be the closest of friends with a free and democratic Iran.”

The head of the US Empire, who stole the last two Presidential elections and is systematically taking away democratic rights in his own country, declares that he respects our “right to choose our own future and win our freedom”?

We do need to win our freedom from the Islamic Fundamentalist rulers of Iran, but we don’t need the Bush regime as our broker! We do not need an Imperialist broker at all! Iranians know too well about the US and Bush regime’s intentions with our experience from 1953 through 1979 and up to now. We do not want our people oppressed and our oil stolen under the pretext of bringing freedom and democracy to us by military force, or the lies and fear-mongering about Iran’s nuclear program and the so-called “War on Terror.”

Next door to us is Iraq, which is in turmoil, with the Jihadist movement growing because of US military occupation and enforcement of so-called freedom and democracy. We are watching the movie in Iraq and we do not need a sequel in Iran. We Iranians intend to gain freedom and democracy on our own. We want a better world for ourselves and for all humanity. We want a world without the Imperialist pole and without the Islamic fundamentalist pole. We intend to struggle to free ourselves, independent of those two reactionary and outmoded poles, as part of our contribution to the world’s oppressed and working class revolution of the 21st Century.

In closing, and given the current situation with the real possibility of a US war on Iran in the near future, I want to invite Americans to join the organization The World Can’t Wait – Drive Out the Bush Regime. If you haven’t joined it yet, I wonder why not? Do you think reading about outrageous lies of the Bush regime on the Internet is enough to put a stop to this fascist course that has been set here in the U.S.? Do you think that the U.S. government is not imperialism compare to 1953 when it US coup brought the Shah back to power by overthrowing the national government of Dr. Mosadegh? Don’t you see that what is going on in America is not and has not been the democracy but the capitalism-Imperialism with political structures to enforce that Imperialism? Don’t you see that what US has been spreading around the world is not democracy and in fact it is spreading its tentacles of Imperialism exploitation backed by military power? What do you have to say about those questions? What are you going to do about it? It’s going to take all of us working together if we’re really going to have a chance to change the whole direction. Let’s get out and get organized - time is of the essence.

Let the Iranian people take care of the needed regime change in Iran. And let’s get the American people to take care of the needed regime change here. That will be the greatest gift to the people of Iran and the rest of the world. The World Can’t Wait – Drive Out the Bush Regime!

Stop the US Military Attack on Iran

U.S. Out of the Middle East now!

No Blood, and no false promise of freedom and democracy, for Oil!

We Say: No to the Jihadist and Islamic Fundamentalist pole of the world!

We Say: No to the Imperialist pole of the world!

We Say: Yes to the independent pole of oppressed and working people of the world!
