Apology For The "F" Word And War

By Mary Hamer

28 January, 2010
Countercurrents.org

*PURPOSE: I am writing this essay to Apologize for the “F” word. The “F” word is a swear word, a form of Human Cruelty & it is a Violent word. (1) Human cruelty comes in all sizes & shapes ranging from swear words like the “F” word to punches to gunshot wounds to nuclear bombs & war. People who use the “F” word are angry & they have an: “I am superior, You are inferior” mindset with a motive to shame others. Quantum mechanics & Chaos fractal theories link the “F” word to the greater forms of cruelty such as Wars. What is the cause of all this Human cruelty? – The Homo Sapien Ego. May we all paradigm shift from Ego & Cruelty to Compassion. The Key sections of this paper are:

I. APOLOGY for the “F” Word.

II. The HUMAN EGO: The Cause of Human Cruelty.

III. QUANTUM MECHANICS, The “F” Word & War.

IV. PARADIGM SHIFT from: Ego & Cruelty to Compassion.

V. WHY write Apology essays?

VI. CONCLUSION

I. APOLOGY FOR THE “F” WORD:

*THE “F” WORD: A RED FLAG for CRUELTY

*APOLOGY: I apologize for the human cruelty of the “F” word, a swear word. (2) The “F” word says: I am angry & I want to defeat you, to diminish you, to lessen you, to shame you, to humiliate you, to Bring You Down. Applying Quantum mechanics theory & the interconnectedness of the universe (3): The “F” word is a microcosm of war; It is a microcosm of a nuclear bomb. The “F” word is a form of Cruelty, i.e. the “Deliberate infliction of pain & suffering” on others. (4) The Irrational thoughts of Superiority associated with the “F” word are the same fractal units/the root causes/the core issues (5) involved in war, gun violence, assaults by punching with a fist, pushing the button to detonate a nuclear bomb, etc.. I apologize for this swear word & the harm it does to others.

*METAPHYSICS of the “F” Word: Let’s examine the cruelty of the “F” word. What is the Metaphysics or the Fundamental reality of the “F” word? Let’s observe what happens between an Attacker & a Victim – Using Albert Ellis’: Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy as a guideline. (6) The “F” word starts in the Attacker’s brain as a neuronal synaptic Irrational thought based on the Ego: e.g. “I am the god of the universe; You must treat me right -- Or You be damned”. If the Attacker’s Superior Ego attitude is violated, then the Attacker becomes Angry. The Attacker has no frontal lobe brain impulse control & no concern about inflicting pain on others; The Attacker has bought into bad habits about cruelty from his family, friends, school & the media. The Attacker aims the Anger at a target, our Victim -- in the form of a swear word, a punch, a gunshot wound, etc.. The “F” word: *@#$%&* starts as a neuronal synaptic event in the Attackers brain. This brain activity causes the vocal cords, lungs, tongue & lips to form & yell out the ”F” word. The sound waves of this swear word travel across time & space to enter the Victim’s ear; This energy then hits the tympanic membrane, makes the ear ossicles shake & causes the cochlear hair cells to vibrate & transmit a signal to the auditory complex & the emotion center. The Victim feels bad in response to this swear word. We will discuss the Victim’s response to the Attacker’s swear word in the Newtons’ 3rd Law Section below.

*In summary, Irrational Ego thoughts beget violent language such as the “F” word which begets Cruel & violent actions. An “F” word is a Red flag for a person at risk for cruelty & violence.

*HIMSA or Violence & The “F” Word: “All harsh & rude speech is Himsa. … Wounding the feelings of others by gesture, expression, tone of voice and unkind words is also Himsa. (7)

*HUMILIATION & the “F” Word: The “F” Word humiliates people. Humiliation is a form of Himsa or Violence: Lindner defines humiliation as: “The lowering of a person or group, a process of subjugation that damages or strips away pride, honor or dignity. To be humiliated is to be placed against your will & often in a deeply hurtful way … It often involves acts of force. At it’s heart is the idea of pinning down, putting down or holding to the ground … Made helpless”. (8) The “F” word puts people down & thereby it humiliates others. What are the consequences of humiliation? “Humiliation may be a significant source of profound relational disconnection”. (9) Lindner references a Somali proverb: “Humiliation is worse than death; In times of war, words of humiliation hurt more than bullets”. (10) In conclusion, humiliating words such as the “F” word can contribute to disconnected relationships & these words can “hurt more that bullets”.

LIFE-ALIENATING COMMUNICATION: Rosenberg discusses types of “Life-alienating Communication” including: Moralistic Judgments that imply Wrongness or badness such as blaming, insults, put-downs, criticisms, etc.. Rosenberg references O.J Harvey’s work which shows that: There is a “High correlation between the frequent use of (words that classify & judge people) & incidences of violence”. (11)

*NEWTON’S 3rd LAW & REVENGE: So far we have focused on the Attacker’s point of view regarding this “F” word. What should a Victim’s response be If someone calls out the “F” word? What is the noble response to this swear word? The Homo Sapien species lives by Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion (12) or the Revenge ethic: i.e. For every action there is an equal & opposite reaction -- If you punch me, Then I punch you back

*Challenging Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion with Non-violent Methods: Why must humans behave according the Newton’s Law & commit acts of Revenge? Why must the Victim avenge the Attacker’s swear word? The truth is: Two wrongs do Not make a right. Victims of violence have Choices: #1. To get revenge or #2. Victims can choose a Non-violent response such as walking away or the Rule of law. (13) The importance of the Rule of law is as follows: “A system of order (i.e. the Rule of law) had to be devised to control … brutal behaviors. (e.g. Revenge, violence, killing, etc.) Thus was born the idea of justice” (14) May we seek more civilized alternatives to acts of revenge such as justice & the rule of law.

*DO NO HARM & the “F” Word: The Do No Harm, Ahimsa & Non-violence philosophy goes far beyond not killing – To advanced concepts of Not harming, not offending, not humiliating, not shaming -- Not even having the thought of revenge, hatred or malice.

*GANDHI: Ahimsa means that: “You may not offend anybody. You may not harbor an uncharitable thought, even … with those (you consider) to be your enemy”. (15) “Nonviolence means avoiding injury to anything on earth in thought, word or deed”. Also, Gandhi states: “Nonviolence is restraint” & “Ahimsa calls for the strength & courage to suffer without retaliation”. (16)

*HOMO EARTH: Homo Earth, the new human species (17), prefer Non-Violent Methods of action in response to conflicts including: Walking away & the Rule of Law – Rather than performing acts of Revenge. Also, Homo Earth do not categorize people as “Me –vs- You”, the Enemy – Rather the mindset is: ”We”.

*CONCLUSION: There are many forms of violence from the subtle frown to a swear word to gun violence to a bomb. May the human race evolve to a state of international Ahimsa #1. Beyond the physical violence of guns, bombs & war -- and #2. Beyond the verbal violence of hate speech & swearing – To a state of Not harming, Not offending, Not shaming.

FUNERAL FOR THE “F” WORD: I propose a Nonviolent Method of action (18) for the “F” word such as a funeral to non-violently argue against the use of this swear word. (19) Here is the Obituary of such a Non-violent response to this swear word:

*OBITUARY: The “F” word died on 1/21/10 of a heart attack. The “F” word was the child of: Ego & Anger and the “F” word is the parents of Cruelty & War. The “F” word struggled all of his life with an Irrational Ego & an Amygdala fight or flight, do or die response to stress. As a result of his impulsive, unrestrained behavior he was Cruel & Violent and he inflicted significant pain & suffering on people, animals & the Earth. His psychiatrist discovered that the “F” word had a Kill gene on Chromosome #13, but that Education could significantly help his problem. There will be a public opening at the Pride Funeral Home with forgiving pink flowers & soft music playing in the background. The eulogy will be given by Hip Hop legend Russell Simmons & the ASPCA in a public service campaign titled: “Cruel’s Not Cool”. (20) There will be an open casket so people can see the truth about this tragic problem of Human Cruelty. A black hearse will transport the corpse of the “F” word to the Narcissistic Cemetary. At the “F” word’s final resting place, I will pray to the sky that the human race will Stop the Cruelty to humans, animals & the Earth. The tombstone of the “F” word will read: “Please Do No Harm”. Please make donations out to Cruelty-free charities. Please support Cruelty-free personal & household products & services. Please also support Cruelty-free stock market & other investments in your portfolio.

II. THE CAUSE OF HUMAN CRUELTY: The HUMAN EGO

*DEFINITIONS:

EGO: “An inflated feeling of pride in your superiority to others”. (21)

Narcissism: Key features of Narcissism according to DSM criteria include: A grandiose sense of self-importance, a need for admiration & a lack of empathy. (22)

Anger: -- A cousin of Cruelty -- “A strong feeling of displeasure, hostility or antagonism towards someone … usually combined with an urge to harm”. (23)

Definition of Violence: -- Another cousin of Cruelty – “Action intended to cause destruction, pain or suffering”. (24)

*EGO: The human Ego with it’s feeling of Superiority & it’s partner in crime Anger are the cause of Human Cruelty & Violence to humans, animals & the Earth. It is the person who feels they are Superior who is dangerous & capable of harming others. “Violent acts follow from high self-esteem, not from low self-esteem”. (25) “Cruelty usually carries connotations of supremacy over a … weaker force”. (26)

It is the Homo Sapien with a big Ego: Who swears, who abuses a child, who beats a dog or who pollutes a river or cuts down a forest. Also, It is this Ego & it’s Superiority ethic that are key elements of racism (27) & slavery.

*DOMINATION & Cruelty: Dr. Neal Barnard states one of the reasons people abuse animals is the: Domination ethic: “Domination plays a key role in hunting (Note the importance of size in trophy animals) & especially in rodeo(s) where virtually every event involves throwing animals to the ground, typing them up & keeping them immobilized”. (28) Similarly, when we use the “F” word we are trying to dominate others & “throw” them down to the ground.

*WHO IS CRUEL?

*All are Capable of Cruelty: Kathleen Taylor in her book: Cruelty warns us that: “Every one of us is capable of being cruel”. (29)

*Human Potential for Violence: Regush warns all humans of our “Breaking Point” & our “Potential for Violence” including: “The potential of people everywhere on this planet to break down under severe stress”. Regush states: “Everyone is capable of causing harm or murder”. (30)

*RESPONSIBILITY: We are all responsible for human cruelty. As Homo Sapiens we have free will to choose how we want to behave. Also, we are responsible for cruelty when we hire someone else to be cruel on our behalf. If we buy a piece of meat from the grocery store, we are responsible for any cruelty done to that farm animal. “You may not have killed the animal yourself, but you hired the killer”. (31) The chain of responsibility for cruelty includes: The grocery store owner, the trucker, the slaughterhouse owner & worker, the meat buyer, the farmer & farm animal breeder & veterinarian & the public consumer. We may argue that we are just innocent bystanders of cruelty – But there are no innocent bystanders. (32) Similarly, we all have the free will to swear or not to swear. We are also responsible for teaching children that: Irrational thinking & anger displays – Are Not okay – They are not healthy forms of behavior.

III. QUANTUM MECHANICS, The BUTTERFLY EFFECT, The “F” Word & War:

*The “F” word & War are Fractal cousins in the Quantum universe; They are both forms of Human Cruelty; Both are caused by irrational Ego demands; Both result in pain & suffering. While some may argue that the “F” word & war are at the two extremes of human violence, Quantum mechanics theory argues for the interconnectedness of the universe (33) – & that these extreme types of violence are both similar forms of negative energy. While quantum mechanics argues for a spatial concept of interconnectedness, I would also add a temporal concept of interconnectedness – coupled with the Butterfly effect (34); This amended quantum theory would also explain that past conditions significantly influence present day events – with a magnified effect. Hence, the “F” word transmits negative energy not only horizontally in time to other living beings in the here & now, but the “F” word also transmits negative energy to other forces through vertical time into the future.

*Haiti & Columbus: For example, Christopher Columbus in committing genocide against the people of Hispaniola/Haiti (35) created a negative quantum butterfly effect (36) in time that -- In my opinion contributed to many of the severe political, social & economic problems in Haiti today – 500+ years after Columbus’ crimes.

*Hitler & the Nazis: Also, the Allied Powers “Policies (e.g. the Versailles Treaty) toward Germany helped to create the context of economic & political stress that opened the door to Hitler’s appeal as a demagogue”. (37) Andelman in his book Shattered Peace discusses the many “Failures of the Peacemakers of Paris” regarding the Versailles Treaty of 1919 which have had a significant negative impact on international affairs up until today, including Hilter’s Germany during WWII & Middle East conflicts. (38)

*THE DANGEROUS MYTH that WAR IS EXCITING & PEACE IS BORING:

A negative feature of the human Ego is that Tough, macho, loud behavior is Exciting including: Swear words, harassing people, & other displays of aggression. This Ego myth puts the world at risk for Cruelty & violence including War. The War is Exciting & Peace is Boring Video (39) -- done in a Matrix Movie style with news ticker war messages -- states: “Peace is boring, lazy, un-heroic, chicken liver nonsense. War is stimulating, exciting, a reason to live, medals & bravery, high ratings on the evening news, fabulous graphics, awe-inspiring music … War is Pulitzer Prizes”. This video talks about the “Excitement of Shock & Awe”. This video also addresses the media: “Without war you Journalists (would) be covering a pumpkin festival in North Dakota”; “You will cheerlead us on to war because perhaps your network is owned by a Defense contractor”.

*TRAGIC CONSEQUENCES OF VIOLENCE: “When A-bombs exploded over Hiroshima & Nagasaki (in 1945), Einstein expressed deep regret. After the war, he apologized personally – and in tears – to visiting Japanese Physicist Hideki Yukawa”. (40) “Katusu Hara editor of the Japanese magazine Kaizo asked Einstein to comment on his role in the development of the atomic bomb”; She asked Einstein: “What do you think of an atomic bomb as a means of Slaughtering human beings?” (41) Einstein co-wrote the Russell-Einstein Manifesto which warned the world about the dangers of nuclear war & urged nations: “To find peaceful means for the settlement of all matters of dispute”. (42)

*JAPANESE: Renounce War: Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution states: “The Japanese people forever renounce(:) war as a sovereign right of the nation & the threat or use of force as (a) means of settling international disputes. …Land, sea & air forces … will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized”. (43) Similarly, may we renounce all forms of violence & cruelty from swear words to animal abuse to nuclear bombs.

*PICASSO’S GUERNICA: Picasso’s painting “Guernica shows the tragedies of war & the suffering it inflicts upon” life. “Guernica shows suffering people, animals & building wrenched by violence & chaos”. (44) Holliday discusses the Artistic perspective of this painting including: “Open mouths shriek in pain & terror”, “Eyes open in horror”, “Gashing wounds” & the “Chaos of the bombing”. Picasso admitted to the public that the (tortured) horse represents ‘the people’ of Guernica … who were victimized by ‘incomprehensible cruelty’” (45) & war. Why aren’t Homo Sapiens aware of the pain & suffering they cause with war -- not only to humans, but also to animals & the Earth?

*KOYAANISKATSI & NAQOYQATSI: Koyaaniskatsi, from the Hopi language, means: Crazy life, Life in turmoil, Life disintegrating, Life out of balance. Naqoyqatsi, also from the Hopi language, means: A life of killing each other, War as a way of life, Civilized violence. Godfrey Reggio explores these concepts in his Qatsi trilogy films. (46) Why is the human race: living the Crazy life, a life that is disintegrating, a life of killing – with the use of the “F” word, guns, nuclear bombs & war?

IV. PARADIGM SHIFT from EGO & CRUELTY to COMPASSION:

*DEFINITION: “The definition of Compassion is: Wanting others to be free from suffering”. (47)

*ADVANCED LEVELS OF HUMAN THINKING: Hawkins categorizes the energy levels of human consciousness & he ascribes values to these states of consciousness; The higher the number, the higher the level of consciousness. Love (including Compassion) (score: #500) is a level of human consciousness that scores higher than Pride (including: Ego & Selfishness, Nationalism & Racism & Religious Wars) (score: #175) or Anger (score: #150). Shame is the lowest of the levels of human consciousness with a score of #20; Shame is close to death; “Death by avoidable accident is common here”; “Shame is used as a tool of cruelty”. (48) “As you raise you consciousness (e.g. to unconditional love) & release your fear, the desire for violence dissipates, then (it) eventually disappears” (49) I would place the “F” word, war & other forms of violence in the relatively low Anger & Pride/Ego consciousness range of 150-175 or below. The goal in each of our transformations is to move away from the lower levels of consciousness to higher levels of awareness such a Unconditional Love.

*EGO DEATH: Cohen “Calls for an Evolution beyond Ego” including Ego Death. (50)

*CRUELTY-FREE LIFE: May we all make efforts to live a Cruelty-free life. May we all have a spirit of Namaste (51) i.e. “I bow to the divine in You” – Paradigm shifting from cruelty to compassion towards Humans, animals & the Earth. My definition of Cruelty-free is: #1. Non-Harming of Human Beings (e.g. Polite communication, Non-violent daily behavior, Equality for all including gender, race & religion. #2. Non-/Minimal Harming of Animals e.g. Use of products Not tested on animals & products Not made of animal parts & Investments (Stock Market, Pension funds, Real estate, etc.) that do Not support animal cruelty. #3. Non-/Minimal Harming of the Environment.

*EDUCATION in NONVIOLENT Principles: Education is a good way to start in the transformation process. The Berkeley Course on Nonviolence by Professor Emeritus Michael Nagler is an excellent YouTube course on Nonviolent principles. (52)

*POWDER & PETA: The movie Powder was a key evolutionary step in my life toward compassion. Powder is a Film: by Victor Salva, starring Sean Patrick Flanery as the main character: Jeremy Reed. (53) The main character Jeremy is extremely sensitive to & aware of the pain & suffering of other living beings in the world around him; When Jeremy mentally connects a hunter to the pain of a gunshot wounded deer, the hunter experiences a major transformation. Also, after I received a PETA membership as a gift, I began to read about & to understand that animals know fear & they are capable of pain & suffering just as human beings are. PETA’s key philosophy is that: Animals are not ours to Eat, Wear, Experiment On, to Use for Entertainment or to Abuse in any way. (54)

*HUMAN TRANSFORMATIONS From Cruelty to Compassion:

It is the person who comes to an awareness of his/her human cruelty & who makes efforts to improve -- that is transforming to a higher level of consciousness. For example, If Osama Bin Laden were to realize the cruelty of terrorism & bombing people and If he crossed over to Mohatma Ghandi’s Non-violent philosophy (55) (56) (57) -- To write political essays as his way of communicating about injustices in the world – To choose to educate people – Rather than to bomb them – That would be a paradigm shift.

V. APOLOGY ESSAYS on HUMAN CRUELTY:

*WHY WRITE APOLOGY ESSAYS ON HUMAN CRUELTY?:

I write Apology essays to: #1. Acknowledge the pain & suffering of victims of human cruelty & #2. To cope with the anguish I have when I witness human acts of cruelty such as: the verbal abuse of a person, the neglect of a stray dog or cat or a nuclear bomb blast.

Also, #3. Engel explains: “A meaningful apology communicates the three R’s: Regret, Responsibility & Remedy. “An apology is more than just saying ‘I’m sorry’. It is also … a peace offering”. (58)

*GETTING CLOSE TO THE TRUTH:

I write political essays to try to get close to the truth about human cruelty & violence. I try to get down to the fractal unit of truth related to the pain & suffering that Homo Sapiens cause to others. For example, when I watch the YouTube video of actual aerial footage of the Hiroshima & Nagasaki bombings (59) – I realize how cruel Homo Sapiens can be. Also, when I read about the genocide of the Native American Indians by the European settlers & the Americans – I realize the cruelty Homo Sapiens are capable of.

*INCONSISTENT, DISCORDANT INFORMATION:

In trying to get close to the truth about a topic, often there is inconsistent or discordant information. For example, regarding depleted uranium (DU), some references state that there are dangers including health risks to humans & to the environment – While on the other hand some authoritative organizations claim that DU is safe, harmless, not dangerous, that there is no proof that DU causes health problems or that follow-up is not warranted. (60) (61) (62) (63) (64)

*EXAMPLES of Apologies: I apologize for the Hiroshima & Nagasaki atomic bombs. I apologize for the Nazi genocide of the Jews during WWII. I apologize for African-American slavery. I apologize for the cruelty of skinning foxes & dogs alive in Hebei Province – All for a sexy fur coat. (65) (66) I apologize for people who sell their companion horses for a horrific slaughter in Mexico by knife stabbing – All for human & pet food. I apologize for the brutal clubbing of baby seals in Canada each spring. I apologize to the children who play with spent Depleted uranium (DU) bullets. I apologize for the military use of DU that has a “Half-life of 4.5 Billion years – The age of our solar system”. (67) I apologize for any use of Depleted uranium that is contaminated with: ”Plutonium” (68) or “Highly radioactive Uranium-236” (69) (70) (71)

VI. CONCLUSION: *In conclusion, I apologize for the “F” word, war, nuclear bombs & all human cruelty & violence. I withdraw my name from the human race. I will not participate in these Homo Sapien: Irrational beliefs, cognitive distortions (72) & emotional disturbances. I am a new species: Homo Earth – #1. A species that treats humans, animals & the Earth with respect & #2. A species that has good critical thinking skills & #3. A species that wishes all to be free from pain & suffering. May I do no harm in my life. Namaste.

Salaam Shalom Shanti Peace.

Thank you. Respectfully, Mary Hamer, M.D.
