Human Cruelty And The Metaphysics Of
A Swear Word

By Mary Hamer

08 September, 2009
Countercurrents.org

MISSION STATEMENT: APOLOGY: This paper is an Apology to all those Humans, Animals & the Earth who have suffered at the hands of Human cruelty.

DEFINITION OF CRUELTY: I define Cruelty as the: “Deliberate infliction of pain & suffering” (1) on other living beings or the planet Earth. I also include in a broader definition of cruelty: Not only Intentional/Willful acts, but also Ignorance or Indifference as the cause of pain & suffering. I also include in this Earthly definition of cruelty: Destructive acts to plant & non-living components of Earth's ecosystems such as the air, land, water & trees. Another negative feature of cruelty is the Domination & Inequality ethic: “Cruelty usually carries connotations of supremacy over a … weaker force”. (2) In this essay I discuss: The Human Potential for Cruelty, Killing, Redefining Cruelty in the 21 st Century, Causes of Cruelty including Distancing Techniques, The Language of Cruelty, Pain & Suffering and Problem-Solving.

*THE METAPHYSICS OF A SWEAR WORD:

Let's follow the fundamental reality of a Swear word & the cruelty involved in this act. The Attacker is Angry about issue X. The Attacker has no frontal lobe brain impulse control & no concern about inflicting pain on others; The Attacker bought into bad habits about cruelty from his family, friends, school & the media. The Attacker finds a target & aims the Anger at a Victim in the form of a swear word. A swear word: *@#$%&* starts as a neuronal synaptic connection in the Attackers brain. This neurologic information causes the vocal cords, lungs, tongue & lips to form & yell out the swear word. The sound waves of the swear word travel across time & space to enter the Victim's ear; This energy then hits the tympanic membrane, makes the ear ossicles move & causes the cochlear hair cells to vibrate & transmit a signal to the auditory complex & the emotion center. The Victim feels bad in response to this swear word. The Victim has a choice whether to retaliate or not. Will the Victim take out a gun & shoot? Or will the Victim choose a cruelty-free non-violent response such as walking away?

I. HUMAN POTENTIAL FOR CRUELTY & VIOLENCE:

*All are Capable of Cruelty: Kathleen Taylor in her book: Cruelty warns us that: “Every one of us is capable of being cruel”. (3)

*Human Potential for Violence: Regush warns all humans of our “Breaking Point” & our “Potential for Violence” including: “The potential of people everywhere on this planet to break down under severe stress”. Regush states: “Everyone is capable of causing harm or murder”. (4)

II. THE ULTIMATE FORM OF CRUELTY: KILLING

*HORRIFYING TERRITORY: Alberto Franceschini, the Founder of the Red Brigade terrorist group describes the act of killing: “You really do experience hell. You cross a certain line when you kill someone. – Enter a horrifying territory. – About which you prefer not to talk. It's something you can not express in words”. (5)

KEY QUESTIONS: Can the human race choose: -- Not to harm other humans? -- Not to pull the trigger of a gun? -- Not to be cruel to animals? -- Not to destroy the planet Earth with nuclear bombs, deforestation, fossil fuel burning, ocean trawling & pesticides? -- Or will humans cross into Franceschini's “ Horrifying Territory ” & kill the planet Earth?

*THE HUMAN KILL GENE: Humans say: they are Pro-Life, the Superior species & Democratic -- But the truth is Homo Sapiens Kill & they kill & they kill. Humans kill enemies during war. Humans kill in the name of God, religion & holy books. Humans kill with their fists, guns, knives, bombs – for revenge, sex, money, etc.. Humans kill farm animals for food. Humans kill animals in research laboratories studying cures for human-caused diseases. Humans kill tigers & baby seals for sexual aphrodisiacs, trophies & trinkets. Humans kill raccoon dogs & foxes for sexy fur coats. Humans kill cows & baby calves for sexy leather coats & shoes. Humans kill wolves with guns, traps & poisons. Humans kill racehorses & greyhound dogs for sport. Humans kill dancing elephants & jumping dolphins for entertainment. Humans kill bulls with red capes & spears. Humans kill the Amazon rainforest to grow & kill more cows. Humans kill Pacific rainforests to grow palm oil for human lipstick. Humans kill rivers & lakes with smokestack & mercury pollution & acid rain. Humans kill rivers & lakes with pesticide run-off from golf courses. Humans kill spraying the Earth with pesticides. Humans kill habitats such as the Everglades to build houses. Humans kill with cars & trucks. Humans kill the air with CO2 emissions. Humans kill other living beings on Earth due to excessive human reproduction -- By selfishly consuming a significant amount of the sun's finite light energy & making extinct other species & natural resources. Humans kill with noise pollution. Humans kill mountains mining for coal, iron & uranium. Humans kill with nuclear bombs, nuclear testing & nuclear waste. Humans kill with the Hiroshima & Nagasaki atomic bombs. Humans kill with nuclear accidents such as Chernobyl . Humans kill with depleted uranium bullets. Humans kill oceans with garbage dumping, fish trawling & human sewage dumping. Humans kill whales & dolphins with military sonar. Humans kill with the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. (6) Humans kill wildlife with arson wildfires. Humans kill enemy ecosystems with bombs, Napalm & Agent Orange. Humans kill soldiers with PTSD. Humans kill humans & animals with landmines. Humans kill family members & animals during domestic violence. Humans kill stray animals & homeless people by neglect. Humans kill the poor, the disabled, the sick & the elderly by neglect. Humans kill with their vocal cords, swear words, 3 rd fingers & guns. Humans kill by bullying, shaming & humiliating. Pro-Life, Superior & Democratic Homo Sapiens Kill & they kill & they kill.

EXISTENTIAL REALIZATION: Homo Sapiens Kill & they have No true remorse, No genuine humility & No real guilt about their Killing. Also, humans use Dishonest reasons to deny their cruelty to others; These dishonest reasons are discussed in the Causes of Cruelty Section.

III. REDEFINING CRUELTY IN THE 21 ST CENTURY:

*Old Definition of Cruelty: Historically, the most publicly acknowledged types of cruelty include: Physical acts such as Wars, Assaults on people or animals, torture/beating & Neglect, etc..

*Other New Types of Cruelty: Subtle but powerful types of cruelty also include: Overpopulation & Excessive Consumption. Also, there are other types of cruelty that are hidden behind corporate profits & greed – I call Crimes against the Earth: Deforestation, Mining, Nuclear Power & Waste, Ocean Trawling & Animal Extinctions.

*Example of Human Cruelty: e.g. The neglect of the needs of a spinal cord injury, wheelchair patient.

Example of Animal Cruelty: e.g. The mass slaughter of baby seals in Canada in March/April each year.

Environmental Man-Made Crimes against the Earth: e.g. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident, the Exxon Valdez oil spill & the Bhopal industrial disaster. (7) Although these events were not “Intentional”, they were due to Ignorance -- which I include in my broad definition of cruelty.

Overpopulation & Popul”U”tion. (8) Overpopulation is a form of cruelty to & a Crime against the Earth.

*SILENT CRUELTY: HARMING OTHERS by CONSUMING: Stephanie Kaza's book Hooked discusses how consumerism harms. Kaza asks us to make a choice: “How much harm (do) we want to be responsible for(?)” – Regarding the exploitation of the Earth. (9) My interpretation is that: When we buy a “Thing” we harm all components of the process to some degree including: The human workers, the animals, the plants, & the Earth. Consumption of “Stuff” takes energy, vitality & life blood from some other life form or geologic force/entity. It is Not about guilt or being a victim – It is all about taking Responsibility for the planet Earth.

*WEAPONS OF CRUELTY:

*Human Weapons: Human weapons are evolving to more & more dangerous forms of inflicting harm on one another: e.g. Swear words, obscene gestures, punches & kicks, stones & sticks, arrowheads, bows & arrows, guns, grenades, laser weapons, nuclear bombs, etc..

IV. CAUSES OF CRUELTY: What are the causes of human cruelty?

*EGO & Domination: In my opinion, the main cause of cruelty is the human Ego. The human ego Judges others as being Bad, Targets these Enemies & takes Violent Cruel Action against them.

#1. Judging: The ego thinks irrationally in demanding, rigid terms: It judges, rates & condemns others. It judges others as: Bad, inferior, evil, wrong, imperfect, damaged, ugly, etc. The ego & the domination ethic says I am superior & you are inferior – Therefore I am entitled to control you.

#2. Enemies: Who are the targets of the human ego? – The targets are the “You” or the “Other”: such as Enemies or Vulnerable people [e.g. Children, the poor, the disabled, the sick & the elderly], Animals, & the planet Earth.

#3. Violent Cruel Action: The ego with it's “I am the center of the universe” attitude & lack of restraint takes action & attacks – for survival, revenge or fun.

*IGNORANCE: Lack of Awareness: Humans do not understand the relationship between chronic yelling & hitting of a child, poor school performance & juvenile crime. Humans are unaware of the great pain & suffering we cause to all life forms. In my opinion, we are responsible for the ignorance of harming others. There are many self-improvement methods available to deal with ignorance such as Education, counseling, spiritual work, etc..

*DENIAL of RESPONSIBILITY & EXPLOITER EXCUSES: Distancing Techniques: Serpell referencing Maccoby describes: “Four distancing devices used to reduce the guilt of the Animal exploiter: Detachment (e.g. avoiding emotional intimacy with the animal), Concealment (e.g. in far away factory farms), Misrepresentation (e.g. the exaggeration of the animals' negative qualities as pest or predator) & Shifting the Blame (e.g. pigs … are killed by those who have not reared them). Serpell lists other animal exploiter excuses including: Denial of animal pain, & the right of humans to exploit non-human species (because of the Christian belief of Homo Sapien superiority). Serpell states The: “Christian view that animals were created purely for the benefit of mankind & the Cartesian/(Descartes) idea that (animals are) incapable of suffering” – Gave human beings a ‘License to Kill' – “A permit to use or abuse other life forms with total impunity”. (10)

*ILLUSION: Human Immorality: Professor Krishna states: “We (humans) are far more immoral than the animal…We think we are superior to animals…We have not used (our) abilities to be kinder…We have used (our) abilities to destroy, to be more cruel”. (11)

*AVOIDANCE: Why are humans so cruel to the environment? Allen discusses the six stages of the Ecological Avoidance Syndrome (12) & inaction regarding the environment:

#1. Ignorance: About the true state of the world

#2. Denial: e.g. Placing profit over people…& nature & “The Titanic can't really be sinking!”.

#3. Distraction: “When something is upsetting, a common strategy is to stay…busy”.

#4. Fear

#5. Cynicism The: I “Don't care” attitude.

#6. Resignation & Apathy The: “I'm just one person” attitude.

*GOD & RELIGION: Deepak Chopra states regarding the human race & animals: “We (humans) are predators. We pollute. We kill each other. In the name of God & religion, we have practiced genocide, murder, rape, ethnic cleansing, enslavement”. (13)

*PERSONAL GAIN & HARMING: “There is an incentive for deceit, theft & even harming other(s) as long as it results in some sort of personal gain” (14)

*The AWFULIZING Catastrophizing, Fight or Flight, Do or Die AMYGDALA: I believe that some cruelty is driven by Amygdala pathology: The brain's amygdala overreacts to a perceived saber-toothed tiger (which may not exist), Awfulizes & catastrophizes about it & in a fight or flight, do or die response -- attacks the perceived enemy in an act of cruelty.

IV. IRRATIONAL THINKING & THE LANGUAGE OF CRUELTY:

*Irrational Thinking & Cruelty: Dr. Babu Suseelan warns about absolute, closed, dogmatic & rigid thinking –vs- Challenging the truth/validity of information regarding Middle East relations. Dr. Suseelan gives the following examples of illogical thinking or cognitive distortions: Catastrophic thinking (all infidels will go to hell), Labeling (e.g. label non-believers as kafirs), Overgeneralization (making sweeping negative conclusions) (e.g. Christians are rats), Emotional reasoning (emotional justification for bombing, beheading, etc.). Dr. Suseelan discusses problem-solving methods for irrational thought patterns including: Educational reform, cognitive restructuring & Rational thinking programs to deal with the “Righteousness” & the “all or nothing” mentality of people. (15)

*Dangerous, Aggressive Language: Aggressive statements such as: “We'll bomb you back to the Stone Age” (16) & “God said: Earth is yours. Take it. Rape it. It's Yours.”. (17) – Are examples of cruel, inflammatory language that offend people & provoke an aggressive response.

V. PAIN & SUFFERING:

*The Pain & Suffering: If we could design a “Pain Meter” much like a Geiger counter that would measure all the pain, fear & suffering [which I will refer to as “unhappiness”] -- that humans have inflicted on: humans, animals & the planet Earth – Then how much pain & suffering have humans caused to others with Guns, Bullets & Gunshot wounds? How many total units of unhappiness have Homo sapiens inflicted on life & on the Earth e.g. due to: Wars, Hitler's genocide of the Jews during WWII, African-American slavery, the American Indians' Trail of Tears & Wounded Knee, the invasion & occupation of Tibet, the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki? How many units of unhappiness have humans inflicted on others due to: Child abuse, human overpopulation & crowding, pollution, pesticides, animal abuse, animal experiments, animal slaughters, animal skinning for fur coats, animal trapping, stray animals, nuclear bomb tests, habitat destruction, deforestation, animal & plant extinctions, oil spills, strip mining of the Earth, consumerism, ocean trawling & netting, etc.? Can you hear the pain of the human victims, the animals, the trees, the oceans & the skies?

VI. PROBLEM-SOLVING: HUMAN CRUELTY:

EDUCATION:

In my opinion, Education is the best way to deal with the problem of human violence & cruelty. Education helps change dangerous, irrational beliefs into more rational, reasonable thinking.

I would recommend a school curriculum that includes Mahatma Gandhi's NonViolence principles (18), Martin Luther King's Love Your Enemy concepts (19), Nelson Mandela's idea of Forgiving his prison guards (20), Conflict resolution principles, Dialogue techniques & Empathy training. Also, Hip Hop legend Russell Simmons is working with the ASPCA in a public service campaign titled: “Cruel's Not Cool”. (21) Education creates the possibility of peace; It teaches us about the concept of win-win & peaceful coexistence. Good thinking skills are important, since “Thoughts are the seeds of Actions”. (22)

ENVISIONING the DO NO HARM Philosophy: Kundel & Nodine in their scientific article titled: A Visual Concept Shapes Image Perception state: “It may be necessary to have seen radiological abnormalities in the past to be able to form an appropriate visual concept for a current abnormality”. (23) Extrapolating this medical concept to human cruelty: If we have not seen, experienced, been trained in, believed in or understood the Do No Harm ethic in the past, then how can we form a concept of non-violence now or in the future? If we have not experienced or been trained in peacemaking towards children, disabled people, animals or the Earth in the past, then how can we form a concept of peace now or in the future? Education is a one way to start training the world community about not harming others & non-violence.

COMPASSIONATE LISTENING: Yes Magazine & Leah Green present Gene Knudsen Hoffman's philosophy of Compassionate Listening including the idea that “Every act of violence comes from an unhealed wound”. It is important that we listen to both sides of a conflict including the perpetrator's unhealed wound as well as the victim's suffering. (24) Hoffman reminds us of Longfellow's quote: “If we could read the secret history of our enemies we should find in each man's life sorrow & suffering enough to disarm all hostility”. (25)

EMPATHY & COMPASSION:

*DISABLED PERSON IN A WHEELCHAIR: When we pass by someone in a wheelchair, how many of us really acknowledge that person? Do we ever think about how that person became disabled: A birth defect, a car accident, a war injury, MS or were they a victim of a gun shot wound? Do we ever think about the daily challenges of spinal cord injury patients? Do we ever offer a disabled person a helping hand?

*BABY CALF: People say they eat dairy products, Therefore, they don't hurt or harm any animal. Wrong. Once a mother dairy cow gives birth to a baby calf: They are separated: The mother goes back to the milk farm. The baby calf cries for it's mother as the baby is pulled away, off to a dark barn where it will be put into a tiny crate. The calf will live there for several months – Unable to move around, with skin ulcers & breathing ammonia fumes. This baby calf will never see the sun light of day. Then it will be slaughtered for veal meat, calves liver & a leather coat & shoes. Can you hear the baby calf's cries?

*BEAUTIFUL RACEHORSE: Can you hear the horrifying pain of a beautiful racehorse that fractures a leg while running a race. This beautiful horse is so confused as she continues to run on only three legs while one leg is severed & flails in the air. This poor horse is drugged with steroids, whipped by a jockey, bred for long legs that break easily – All for human entertainment & a $2 bet.

LEVELS OF HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS:

Hawkins categorizes the energy levels of human consciousness. Can the world community advance it's consciousness beyond the Anger (of cruelty) with an energy level of #150 – to a state of Love with an energy level of #500? (26)

RESPONSIBILITY FOR CRUELTY:

We are all responsible for cruelty: The perpetrator of child abuse is responsible for this cruelty. But bystanders such as: The spouse, the neighbor, the social workers & the medical staff who are ignorant or ignore the bruises & broken bones & cries of the abused child are also responsible for the cruelty. William S. Burroughs states: “There are no innocent bystanders”. (27)

*RESPONSIBILITY: It is not only the person who pulls the trigger of a gun, but also the gun store owner, the gun salesman, the gun maker, the banker who finances the gun industry, the advertising agency, the truck driver & the mother and father of the gun user who are responsible for gun violence in the world. We are all responsible for gun violence.

NEW LEVELS OF AWARENESS:

After witnessing human cruelty to humans, animals & the Earth,

Now I understand the violence of a gun & the person who pulls the trigger of that gun.

Now I understand the violence of just walking away from a suffering disabled person.

Now I understand the violence of walking away from a starving stray dog or cat.

Now I understand the violence of ignoring a crying child.

VII. CONCLUSION:

APOLOGY:

*In my opinion, humans have committed Negligent acts of cruelty against the Earth by: Breaching a duty owed, whereby that duty has been the Proximate cause of Injury to humans or animals or to the destruction of the Earth.

*I apologize to the human victims of war, abused animals & the exploited Earth for human cruelty.

*I am deeply sorry for the humans who laugh as they abuse a child, slaughter an animal or pollute the Earth.

*I apologize for the ignorance of humans as they fill their bellies with the pain & suffering of cows, pigs, chickens & horses.

*I apologize for humans who surgically mutilate, inject, traumatize, poison, etc. research cats & dogs & other animals in the name of science.

*I apologize for humans who skin beaten raccoon dogs & foxes Alive & throw their gasping nude bodies on a pile of convulsing corpses – All for a sexy fur coat.

*I apologize for humans who rope poor horses & calves Or who throw spears in bulls in sexual displays to prove human dominance over animals – Just to get a sexual date.

*I apologize for governments & corporations who mine, deforest, smokestack pollute, & ocean trawl the Earth for here & now greed & profit -- with no respect for the suffering of the Earth & no respect for future generations.

*I apologize for the violence & cruelty of noise pollution: jet noise, motorcycle noise, loud music & leaf blower noise.

PLEASE DO NO HARM: So it is with this essay about cruelty, that I extend a helping hand out to the next person who is about to commit an act of cruelty. I believe that those who are cruel are suffering themselves. I believe that those who are cruel were at one time the victim of cruelty & that they have unhealed wounds. I extend my helping hand out to you & I ask of you please do no harm even in the midst of your pain. Please in a zen moment of awareness realize the existential sadness of causing harm to another being. Please in a fractal moment in time & space hear the cry of your victim. Please let go of the dangerous emotions; Please walk away & do no harm.

*THE LAND of RIGHTEOUSNESS : I used to walk in the land of righteousness: I thought I was a non-cruel person. But, I surgically experimented on a poor stray dog during my medical school training; I never challenged the ethics of such a cruel act. I also worked in a pharmaceutical research laboratory: I experimented with mice; I never challenged the morality of that cruel act. I used to eat & drink dairy products such as milk, cheese, & yogurt – Until I learned that my dairy addiction caused the deaths of many baby calves; So I no longer consume dairy products. Also, I walked away from & neglected a disabled wheelchair person in need years ago. I have matured to a level now where I would be joyful to help out my spinal cord injury friend. Why did I participate in these acts of cruelty? In America & in the modern world it is culturally acceptable to harm & neglect others. We teach our children to harm & neglect others. What caused my transformation to a more compassionate, empathetic person? Guilt was present after each of these cruel situations that motivated some change. But it was Education [including You Tube videos (28)] & Meditation that motivated the most significant change in my Please Do No Harm mantra. The key moment I underwent a metamorphosis to a more compassionate & less cruel person was when I read an article in a magazine about a scientist who was performing monkey head transplants. The transplanted monkey's eyes show a blank stare as the scientist suctions the blood out of the poor monkey's nose & mouth. (29) How could a scientist cause such significant harm to another living being?. It was a sad existential moment in my life – Realizing the cruelty of the human race in the name of Science & God.

THE RIGHT TO BE FREE OF CRUELTY:

I propose a new United Nations Amendment: I propose that: All sentient life forms (including humans & animals) have the right to be Free of Cruelty & the right Not to have Pain & Suffering cruelly inflicted upon them.

HOMO EARTH: I WITHDRAW MY NAME FROM THE HUMAN RACE:

After witnessing many acts of human cruelty to humans, animals & the planet Earth

I withdraw my name from the human race

This Homo Sapien species is far too cruel for me

I declare myself a new species

I am Homo Earth

-- A species that is partners with & that treats humans, animals & the planet Earth with respect.

NEW LIFE MANTRA:

May I do no harm in my life to any living being. May I inflict as little pain & suffering on any other being as possible. May no human, no animal, no Earthly entity ever suffer because of me.

PLEASE DO NO HARM. Thank you. Respectfully, Mary Hamer.
