Forewarned Is Forearmed

By Timothy V. Gatto

To be “forewarned is to be forearmed”. That’s an old phrase that was originally “Praemonitus praemunitus” is a Latin saying, translated "Forewarned is forearmed" and is the title of one of the editions of the Protocols of Zion. The phrase is a bit of advice that we can all take to heart in this day and age, with all of the things that are taking place before our eyes on almost a daily basis.

"Forewarned is forearmed" Knowledge of imminent danger can prepare us to overcome it. But what is it that we should be prepared for? That my friend is the million dollar question, we are hurtling towards economic meltdown, our streets aren’t safe, the food we eat is altered, the planet is choking on carbon and the icecaps are melting. All of this is a lot to take in. Some people are doing their utmost while some are just biding time until everything falls to pieces.

There is another threat that is looming in the not to distant future for Americans. Our political system is broken beyond repair. The economic and political elite have taken us down a path that resembles class warfare more than it does economic policy. The top 1% of this nation last year owned 38% of its wealth. This year it’s 54%. We have used taxpayer money to attempt to bail out the investment world and free up credit, but it hasn’t seemed to work. The economic systems of the world are crashing along with us. What’s the answer? The answer is to rid the investment houses and banks of predatory CEO’s, CFO’s and the whole gamut of robber barons that pull in millions each year while their companies are in the red. We need to have oversight and salary caps for these executives, especially the ones that are sucking off the Federal Governments teat.

Another fear that I hear bandied about is this threat of martial law. There is a brigade of soldiers attached to Northcom that can be used for homeland security. We all know that using Federal troops is in violation of Posse Comitatus and the President has overstepped his authority once again. This should be seen for exactly what it is, a tactic to put fear in the hearts of Americans. Bush is worried about the economic meltdown and the implications of what may come. Rioting and looting and general insurrection is high on the governments list should the country go bust. This is understandable, but the only people he is really scaring into compliance are people that don’t know any better.

I served in the Army for almost 21 years. Let me tell you that one brigade of soldiers cannot establish martial law. Naiomi Wolf has cried havoc about a “coup” that has taken place. While it may be so politically, militarily we are a long way from a “coup”. The real coup happened when George W. Bush started using signing statements and executive orders to bolster an American dictatorship, while invading other nations for their resources.

I have heard the furor about this “Warriors Code” that Rumsfeld handed out to soldiers. This is not the oath of enlistment; it’s simply a code to live by. The Warriors Code reads like this:

Embedded in the Soldier's Creed is the Warrior Ethos-the very essence of what it means to be a Soldier:

I will always place the mission first.
I will never accept defeat.
I will never quit.
I will never leave a fallen comrade.

So, is that what’s got you on edge? I’ve heard it said that the warrior’s code has replaced the oath of service the American soldier takes, leaving out protecting and defending the Constitution. I’m afraid this is a fabrication. Here is the oath of enlistment in the Armed Forces:

"I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God." (Title 10, US Code; Act of 5 May 1960 replacing the wording first adopted in 1789, with amendment effective 5 October 1962).

I hope that calms some people’s fears about martial law looming, unchecked around the corner. The facts are that a single brigade of up to 7-10,000 soldiers couldn’t do much to impose martial law in one of the largest nations on Earth with a population that is approximately 350,000,000.

If you need something to worry about, plan how we are going to keep a sharp eye on the next President of this country. Both candidates are joined at the hip with corporate interests. Both candidates supported the bailout, both want more war.

This is a conscious effort to keep the American people off guard and fearful. It doesn’t help when we have numerous liberal writers warning of gloom and doom at each passing headline. The key to getting through this is knowing that this government is doing it’s utmost to keep us cowed and compliant. Keep your guard up, and your eyes open. I hate to say this but the only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.

Bush is a master at playing the fear card and playing psychological games. The Democratic candidate is also a Jedi Knight in persuasion. The more we have to fear, the easier we are to control. Let’s get rid of baseless fears and get this government working for the American people again. Don't let them stop us with empty threats.
