Endosulfan Crisis: Write A Letter To Chief Minister Of Kerala

24 March, 2013
Countercurrents.org

The saga of spraying of the deadly chemical Endosulfan on the unsuspecting villages in the Kasargod district of North Kerala on Cashew Plantations by the Plantation Corporation of Kerala has caused untold damage to the lives of humans and the life sustaining ecosystems for years to come. The cruelty and negligence of this aerial spraying continues as this persistant pesticide pervades generations through genetic and physiological abnormalities besides causing damage to all vital organs and organ systems in the human body.

In the wake of many studies done by various agencies, and on the insistence of the National Institute Of Occupational Health, the National Human Rights Commission did an independent study in 2010. The recommendations of the study was submitted to the Kerala Government to be immediately implemented. There has been no action so far. There has been no medical camp in the region since 2011. In the wake of no mention in the budgetary allocation in Kerala Assembly, the people of Kasargod under the aeges of the Endosulfan Peeditha Janakeeya Munettam has been on indefinite fast for a month. Eco-activist A.Mohan kumar has been on fast since 20 days and been removed to the hospital.

Inspite of the clear and just demands by the people, the discussion in the Chief Minister’s Chamber on 21st March did not offer any crucial or concrete plans. The next discussion in which the decisions of the Government will be finalized will take place on Monday the 25th of March. Please show the initiative to endorse the following letter and reach it to the Chief Minister of Kerala before Monday morning.

Respected Sri.Oomen Chandy ,

We write this letter to you with a lot of anguish and concern over the plight of the people living in the villages affected by the poisoning with Endosulfan.
We understand that the present struggle has crossed a month and Sri.Mohan Kumar is on fast for 20 days. We write this to request you to immediately concede with the demands of the people of Kasargod to whom you as a representative of the people owe a responsible attitude and action.
We give below the list of demands that they have been raising peacefully for so many days :

1.To review the decision to give aid and help for just 5 years by the Government
2.To include all deserving people in the list which is now incomplete
3. Implement all the recommendations of the National Human Rights Commission
4.Constitute a Tribunal for Compensation and Identification of the Real culprits
5.The debt load of the affected people be taken by the Government
6. To design a scientific rehabilitation program for the affected region
7To remove and detoxify the endosulfan reserves still remaining in the godowns.

It is indeed shameful that we have to live alongside this terrible tragedy without being able to do the minimum possible for the hapless lives.

Hoping justice and reason would prevail and Kerala would set a model on how just governance should include compensation and rehabilitation packages of the victims of unscientific and indiscriminate planning processes.

In anticipation
