The patience of the common people is running out. Despite standing in queues outside banks, day after day, people are unable to find change, resulting in a huge crisis in their everyday sustenance. On one hand, the food intake in the houses have gone down and on the other hand, huge amounts of perishable goods are being dumped because of no buyers. People who are dying because of the ‘historic’ move of demonetization, are reduced to mere statistical accounts. The rural economy has almost come to a standstill. The accounts in Cooperative Banks, which are largely under the name ofthe farmers’ and low income workers, are not being able to change the higher denominations as the RBI has refused to replace the old currency notes.
An RTO employee, who has been trying to withdraw money from KNS, an Urban Cooperative Bank (UCB) in Govandi, for the past three days, has been unsuccessful in exchanging the currencies. His wife is in the hospital and the chemist is not accepting the old currencies. While standing for hours outside the Bank, he is worried about his child, who is alone at home and demands to know, if this government is capable of thinking about people like him and his family.
