Brexit An Initial People’s Victory In The War On Terracidal Neoliberalism

brexit-china

The  British  working class,  millions of other ordinary  Brits  and a swathe of British  nationalists  have voted for Brexit, the exit of Britain from the EU, with immigration and national self-determination being major issues. The  British political Establishment, the political elites, Mainstream media, EU officials  and the Americans view Brexit as irresponsible and  damaging,  and the Brexit supporters have been falsely maligned as ignorant, stupid, and racist xenophobes. However a view from the Left is that the Brexit vote was a courageous vote against the dominant, monolithic, socially-damaging, terracidal  neoliberal agenda and a vote for national self-determination for a decent and equitable society.

Thus George Galloway (left-wing, anti-war, anti-racism, pro-equity and pro-human rights former British MP) on his support for Brexit: “[The UK should decide] “how many immigrants we have, who we deport, what the levels of taxation are and what our foreign policy should be… I campaigned against breaking up Britain; I campaigned for a No vote in the Scottish referendum. That didn’t mean I was with the Tories or the Orange Order…  [the EU is] built on neo-liberal economic principles which are iron-clad and unchangeable… We want our people to choose our government and thus our direction. I’d rather take my chance with changing things in Britain than waiting for change in Bulgaria or in Poland or in Germany…The people of Greece were crushed underfoot by this neo-liberal consensus on which the EU and its main institutions are built. Portugal actually elected a majority of left-wing MPs and the president of Portugal was told by the European Union ‘you mustn’t summon these people to your palace and ask them to form a government’. This is unconscionable. I don’t want us to suffer the same fate as them” [1].

John Pilger (anti-racist, anti-war, pro-human rights,  expatriate Australian journalist) on Brexit:  “The majority vote by Britons to leave the European Union was an act of raw democracy. Millions of ordinary people refused to be bullied, intimidated and dismissed with open contempt by their presumed betters in the major parties, the leaders of the business and banking oligarchy and the media. This was, in great part, a vote by those angered and demoralised by the sheer arrogance of the apologists for the “remain” campaign and the dismemberment of a socially just civil life in Britain. The last bastion of the historic reforms of 1945, the National Health Service, has been so subverted by Tory and Labour-supported privateers it is fighting for its life… Immigration was exploited in the campaign with consummate cynicism, not only by populist politicians from the lunar right, but by Labour politicians drawing on their own venerable tradition of promoting and nurturing racism, a symptom of corruption not at the bottom but at the top. The reason millions of refugees have fled the Middle East – first Iraq, now Syria – are the invasions and imperial mayhem of Britain, the United States, France, the European Union and Nato. Before that, there was the willful destruction of Yugoslavia. Before that, there was the theft of Palestine and the imposition of Israel” [2]. The impoverished “ordinary” Brits rejected the US-promoted propaganda of the US lackey British Establishment and its associates. It was not “racism” for impoverished ordinary Brits to demand a decent life and rule by an accountable British political system.

Gilad Atzmon (anti-Zionist, Jewish Israeli-origin British writer and musician) ventured onto dangerous ground in identifying a role of both Jewish oligarchy and cultural Marxism in the degree of disempowerment and multiculturalism against which Brexit was a reaction: “ Yesterday Britain voted to leave the EU. The causes of this result have been known for a while. More than half of the Brits are dismayed by the level of immigration, multiculturalism, lack of job opportunities, global capitalism, evaporation of manufacturing and a housing bubble that leaves most young Brits without the prospect of a decent future. The Brexit was an outlet for these legitimate frustrations… The British vote was actually a vote against Goldman Sachs, Soros, Friedman and cultural Marxism, but most of them do not know it yet. Yesterday the Brits proved, once again, that they are a brave people. They made a decision that they understood could inflict some serious difficulties on their society. Knowing that, they marched into the Brexit with pride and I admire their courage.  The Brits voted against immigration, banksters, the global economy, the City and the two parties that have facilitated this disaster for decades” [3].

According to eminent American economist and commentator  Dr Paul Crag Roberts,  the Americans  opposed Brexit because it would block US goals of (1) dominating Europe to the point of WW3,  and (2) ultimately  destroying London as a key financial centre. Dr Paul Craig Roberts on “The Brexit vote – what does it mean?”: “What does it mean? Hopefully, a breakup of the EU and NATO and, thereby, the avoidance of World War III. The EU and NATO are evil institutions. These two institutions are mechanisms created by Washington in order to destroy the sovereignty of European peoples. These two institutions give Washington control over the Western world and serve both as cover and enabler of Washington’s aggression. Without the EU and NATO, Washington could not force Europe and the UK into conflict with Russia, and Washington could not have destroyed seven Muslim countries in 15 years without being isolated as a hated war criminal government, no member of whom could have travelled abroad without being arrested and put on trial” [4].

The downside of Brexit has already been a drop in the British pound and share values, with more damage  to come now the UK lost its AAA credit rating. The UK will be removing itself from a huge free trade zone.  Scotland, Northern  Ireland, London and other major British cities (except Birmingham by a whisker) had majorities voting  against Brexit, and there is now a real possibility that a pro-EU Scotland will leave the UK after a second independence referendum. The Scots by a huge margin evidently feel that loss of sovereignty would be more profitable as part of the EU than as part of a post-Brexit UK. There is the likelihood  that a post-Brexit exit contagion will continue in  France, the Netherlands and Italy where there is mounting pressure for similar exit referenda.

Brexit should also be seen in a long-term historical perspective. For a thousand years the Government of England had an aggressive  policy of  opposing the rise of dominant Continental European powers. This   policy was violently expressed in  a succession of increasingly  sophisticated and bloody wars, namely the mediaeval 100 Years War against France, 16th century war against Spain, 17th century  war against the Dutch, 18th century war against France culminating in defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo (1815), mid-19th   century Anglo-French war against Russia (the Crimean War) ,  and the appallingly destructive Russo-Anglo-French wars against Germany in the first half of the 20th century in WW1 and WW2. The post-1945 era saw the Cold War against Russia led by an America that expanded its hegemony in the Americas to replace the UK as the dominant violent player in Europe, Africa and Asia. Post-1950 avoidable deaths from deprivation totalled 1.5 billion on Spaceship Earth with America in charge of the  flight deck [5].

The post-1945 peace in Western Europe  was underscored by the formation of the free-trade-not-war EU that eventually comprised a swathe of 28 member states including the UK and numerous Eastern European states , an area of   4.3 million  square kilometers, and population of 0.5 billion. However the US replacement of Britain as the world’s number 1 in state terrorism  has already disastrously impacted peace in Europe, with the destruction of Yugoslavia, the break-up of the Soviet Union, the US-backed neo-Nazi coup and civil war in the Ukraine, and US war games on the borders  of Russia. After a thousand years of Continental and global killing by England, all that may soon be left post-Brexit will be  a nuclear armed, isolated, US lackey, rump England, with perhaps the Welsh and Northern Irish  following the adumbrated  Scottish departure from the UK. Who wants to be a nuclear target? Dying for the British Empire was one thing, but dying for the off-shore tax-haven accounts of neoliberal English One Percenters quite another.

The gloom and doom speculations about the economic consequences of Brexit pale into insignificance in the face of the worsening climate emergency –  (a) annual global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions presently total  64Gt CO2-equivalent with methanogenic livestock production and attendant land use contributing about 50%; (b) annual emissions of CO2 per se from industry are at a record high of about 32 Gt CO2, (c) there is a  2009-2050 Terminal Carbon Pollution Budget of  600 Gt CO2 for a 75% chance of avoiding a catastrophic 2 degree Centigrade temperature rise with the  world having a mere 2 years before this is  exceeded; (d) atmospheric  CO2 and methane (CH4) are at 1 million year highs of 405 ppm CO2 and 1,840 ppb CH4, respectively, and increasing at record rates, (e) there are only 15 years to go before an atmospheric 450 ppm CO2 dooms  world coral reefs, and (f) Humanity and  the Biosphere are existentially threatened by CH4 release from  the warming Arctic in coming decades (5,250 Gt CO2-e) [6-11].

More specifically, the pro-One Percenter Eurozone and IMF demand timely repayment of Greece’s Government Debt but ignore the huge Carbon Debt of major industrialized  countries like Germany that measures in dollar terms the huge,  deadly and increasing global environmental damage from GHG pollution. Thus, for example, the  per capita Government Debt plus Carbon Debt is much greater for Germany than for Greece, which should insist with indebted Developing Countries that Carbon Debt is also put on the repayment and global action discussion table [12, 13]. Science-informed and scientifically trained Pope Francis  has demanded that the human and environmental  cost of pollution be “fully borne” by the polluters [14-16], and Dr Chris Hope of 90-Nobel-Laureate University of Cambridge has determined a damage-related Carbon Price of $200 per tonne CO2-equivalent (the atmospheric  GHGs excluding  H2O expressed in terms of CO2-equivalent ) [17].

A dishonest, fraudulent, corrupt, neoliberal, corporatist  and pro-One Percenter Eurozone of course ignores Carbon Debt, is complicit in a worsening climate genocide that is set to kill 10 billion people this century [18], and is complicit in a worsening Global Avoidably Mortality  Holocaust  in which 17 million people die avoidably each year on Spaceship Earth with the First World in charge of the flight deck,  1.3 billion people having died thus since 1950 [5]. Leading economist  Sir  Nicholas Stern critically observed a decade ago that “The science tells us that GHG emissions are an externality; in other words, our emissions affect the lives of others. When people do not pay for the consequences of their actions we have market failure. This is the greatest market failure the world has seen” [19]. Indeed Carbon Debt provides a startling example of  Polya’s Second Law of Economics which states that  “Deception about Cost of Production (COP) strives to a maximum” – our neoliberalism-dominated world remorselessly ignores the human and environmental cost of GHG pollution [20]. The market has failed and the globally dominant neoliberalism paradigm has failed and acutely threatens the Biosphere with speciescide,  ecocide, omnicide and terracide.

Neoliberalism demands maximum freedom for the smart and advantaged to exploit the human and natural resources of the  world for maximal private profit. The humane alternative demanded by the failure  of neoliberalism is social humanism (social democracy, democratic socialism) that seeks to maximize the happiness, dignity  and opportunity of everyone through evolving intra-national and international social contracts [21, 22].   Brexit has been a remarkable event in which 17.5 million Brits disregarded the narrow economic advice of the neoliberal One Percenters and the neoliberal, pro-One Percenter Western elites and opted for bottom-up self-determination for the greater good rather than a grossly inequitable,  top-down neoliberal order that has failed them economically and culturally. The world needs a climate revolution now and urgent replacement of a worsening neoliberal climate genocide with eco-socialism and a decent future for all [18, 23].

Notwithstanding  the false rhetoric of mendacious world leaders at the failed 2015 Paris Climate Conference about keeping global warming to plus 2C or even plus 1.5C (already exceeded in February 2016) ,  it is now too late to avoid a catastrophic plus 2 degrees Centigrade temperature rise. However   we are obliged to do everything we can to make the future “less bad” for future generations. Unfortunately  the neoliberalism-dominated  EU has a poor record in tackling climate change. The EU mandated biofuel  addition to petrol  ignores Biofuel Genocide in Developing countries and the  huge implicit Carbon Debt in most  biofuel production  [24].  The EU Emissions Trading  Scheme (ETS)  is ineffective, counterproductive  and fraudulent with a Carbon Price of circa $7 per tonne CO2-equivalent  (as compared to the expertly-determined, damage-related Carbon Price of $200 per tonne CO2-equivalent) [17].

Revised  annual per capita GHG pollution taking methanogenic land use into account (tonnes CO2-equivalent  per person per year) is greater than the world average of 8.9 for  all EU countries except for Croatia (7.4), and Lithuania (5.9) as shown by this list of EU countries  in descending order of annual per capita pollution: Ireland (41.4), Denmark (27.8), Belgium (26.3), Estonia (25.4), Netherlands (24.9), Luxembourg (23.6), Czech Republic (23.5), Greece (21.9), the UK (21.5), Cyprus (21.4), Spain (20.9), Finland (20.6), Germany (18.6), France (17.7), Italy (17.6), Slovenia (16.5), Slovakia (15.9), Hungary (15.5), Portugal (15.0), Sweden (15.0), Malta (13.3), Austria (13.0), Poland (12.9), Latvia (11.4), Romania (10.9),  Bulgaria (10.1), Croatia (7.4), and Lithuania (5.9) [25]

Alphabetically ordered EU annual per capita GHG pollution (tonnes CO2-equivalent  per person per year): Austria (13.0), Belgium (26.3), Bulgaria (10.1), Croatia (7.4), Cyprus (21.4), Czech Republic (23.5), Denmark (27.8), Estonia (25.4), Finland (20.6), France (17.7), Germany (18.6), Greece (21.9), Hungary (15.5), Ireland (41.4), Italy (17.6), Latvia (11.4), Lithuania (5.9), Luxembourg (23.6), Malta (13.3), Netherlands (24.9), Poland (12.9), Portugal (15.0), Romania (10.9), Slovakia (15.9), Slovenia (16.5), Spain (20.9), Sweden (15.0) and the UK (21.5)) []. By way of comparison are  the values for the US (41.0), China (7.4), Bangladesh (2.7), Pakistan (2.5), and India (2.1) [25].

A better measure of GHG pollution culpability is weighted annual per capita greenhouse gas pollution taking relative per capita income into account, this yielding the following scores for EU countries  “Weighted annual per capita GHG pollution” Luxembourg (256.1), Ireland (206.6), Denmark (158.5), Netherlands (120.8), Belgium (116.0), Finland (95.2), UK ( 92.9), Germany (83.0); Sweden (82.2), France (70.4), Austria (62.0), Spain (58.1), Italy (58.6), Cyprus (52.0), Estonia (47.5), Greece (43.6), Czech Republic (42.5), Slovenia (36.8), Malta (31.3), Portugal (30.9), Slovakia (27.3), Hungary (20.2), Poland (16.9), Latvia (16.6), Romania (10.2),  Croatia (9.3), Lithuania (9.1), and Bulgaria (7.4) [26].

Alphabetically ordered per capita income weighted per capita GHG pollution: Austria (62.0), Belgium (116.0), Bulgaria (7.4), Croatia (9.3), Cyprus (52.0), Czech Republic (42.5), Denmark (158.5), Estonia (47.5), Finland (95.2), France (70.4), Germany (83.0), Greece (43.6), Hungary (20.2), Ireland (206.6), Italy (58.6), Latvia (16.6), Lithuania (9.1), Luxembourg (256.1), Malta (31.3), Netherlands (120.8), Poland (16.9), Portugal (30.9), Romania (10.2), Slovakia (27.3), Slovenia (36.8), Spain (58.1), Sweden (82.2) and the UK (92.9)[26]. In marked contrast are the following “income weighted climate criminality” scores  for Qatar (924.3), Australia (306.8 or  672.8 if including its huge GHG-generating  exports), the US (41.0), China (5.2), Bangladesh (0.3), Pakistan (0.3), and India (0.3) [26].

Brexit marks an initial victory  in the war on monolithic neoliberalism even if the participants don’t realize it. Indeed an overwhelming majority of Labour MPs have immediately  responded by voting (172 to 40) for no confidence in Labour’s socialist leader Jeremy Corbyn for not opposing Brexit more vigorously. Jeremy Corbyn refuses to resign and indeed one supposes that pro-Brexit Labour voters will tend to support socialist Jeremy Corbyn rather than the neoliberal, US lackey, pro-Apartheid Israel, pro-war, Iraqi Genocide-complicit,  Blair-ite New Labor MPs who voted against him.

Things may well get worse economically in the UK and Europe post-Brexit. The pro-One Percenter, Neocon American and Zionist Imperialist (NAZI)-perverted US Government   will no doubt find ways to more than compensate for the set-back to its hegemonic agenda due to Brexit.   The climate emergency is remorselessly worsening. However an optimistic view is that Brexit represents   an important victory of ordinary people   over the pro-One Percenter, neoliberal elites and more is in the pipeline on the Continent. The world is running out of time  to deal with a worsening climate emergency, but effective action is blocked by huge wealth inequality that stymies environmentally-responsible economic activity and perverts democracy (Big Money buys votes). The One Percenters now own half  the world’s wealth [27, 28].

French economist Professor Thomas Piketty has proposed an annual  wealth tax  as a way of addressing the  present huge wealth inequality that is economically damaging  (the poor can’t purchase goods and services they produce) and anti-democratic (Big Money buys public  perception of reality and hence  votes and political power) [29-31]. Indeed an annual wealth tax or zakat of 2.5% has been  mandated by Islam for 1400 years and secular France has an annual wealth tax of 1.5% [32]. It is  estimated that a 4 % annual Global Wealth Tax could  stop the Global  Avoidable  Mortality Holocaust in which 17 million people die from deprivation each year [31]. Inspired by Brexit,  ordinary people must liberate themselves from  One Percenter neoliberalism and insist on equity, democracy and sustainability. 100 years ago socialism was “fair”  and “nice”, but in the worsening climate emergency of the 21st century democratic socialism is required for the very survival of Humanity and the Biosphere.
